Read Differential or Tansfer Case?? Whining!

I have had a whine starting at about 60 mph. It is speed relative. I purchased my car last febuary with 16,000miles on it, there was a whine from day one. Since then i have put 17,000 miles on it. I change the fluid in both the rear diff and transfer case often...three times since i bought the car. When i purchased the car the rear seal on the diff was leaking as well as the axel seals, it was very low on Diaqueen, this was almost a year ago. I just drained the diff fluid and noticed *shards* of metal on the drain plug, they are not small splinters. The fluid is always grey from the diff, the fluid from the t-case is very clean in comparison and has never had any metal flakes in it. Should i start looking for a rear differntial, or is this most likely the t-case. It is very hard to pin point where noise is coming from. Sometimes it sounds like it is coming from the front, sometimes the back....im just not to sure. Any input would be appriciated.

If its howling and its speed related, its probably the transfer case. The rear makes more of a "clunking" sound.

yeah but if you have shards of metal in the rear diff, then u should start saving for a new one i would think... the tc might be a separate issue all together.

Its normal to see some shavings however you should never see shards. The rear fluid should be pretty clean coming out especially if you do your changes regularly. The TC on the other hand will tend to get crapy looking quicker

New Diff Same Sound

Well I had this just happen to me... and the dealer said yup REAR DIFF... now my EVO has 10/100,000 Drive train Warranty... and i track this thing (they have to know)... all the upgrades and they were able to get the rear DIFF replaced under warranty... nothing out of pocket... but the noise is still there... is it now the TC? I am about to roll 40k in miles... and i still have the STOCK CLUTCH...

also is there any break in period... i can't imagine there is..... on diff

from 28MPH to about 40 it's the loudest... then as you go up in speed the noise gets higher pitch so you really can't hear it that much....

so with a BRAN NEW diff in the rear sealed from the factory... that is not the issue. I now have to take it back on Monday and tell them no it's the TC now get that under warranty
