Turbo Experts, HELP
First Thread Ever, anyway when i get on the boost and go to shift to the next gear i hear this loud fluttering noise coming from the drivers side front. It almost sounds like the factory recirc. valve is not letting it vent off properly, also is there a way to test the factory blow off? Just don't want to damage my turbo.
I know the evo 8 recirc valves are crappy. I cannot recall issues other then not holding boost though. It could be a bad recird valve. You can test it with a brake bleeder kit if you have one. Hook it up to the vacuum fitting and see if the valve opens up. If you have a gauge see what the reading is. I know on a subaru the valve opens at around 18in/hg, ours should be similar.
I've checked my boost gauge, it does'nt make the noise if its in a vacuum and i can't hear the blow off at all anymore. With a cone filter you can hear even the factory valve blow off. Also its boosting just fine, but i don't want to keep boosting until i can figure out whats wrong.

like i said, test the recirc valve. They do go bad. Or if you have a buddy with an evo, borrow his and see if it fixes the problem. I recommend if it IS surging not to go into boost. I would also check your vacuum lines. My buddy had a small slit in his line that caused his to do the same thing. It wouldnt hurt to change out the plastic crappy recirc valve anyway.

i think the '05 MR & all the '06 stock bov's are metal like the 1st gen DSM ones. u can probly pick 1 up off ebay. go thru & check all ur vacuum lines, i/c piping for leaks. or look for a nice quality recirc valve online. if u want a VTA bov, u will need the HKS EIDS or a good tuner to adjust ur idle to use it correctly on stock ecu. i run a VTA but i also have a racegas tune at 25+psi on my stock ecu
It definately sounds like compressor surge to me. Take off your bypass valve and see that it still opens. If you can't hear the blowoff anymore and you hear a fluttering noise, that most likely means the valve is not letting off the compressed air and it is being forced back through the turbo- AKA compressor surge.
