EVO 9 TME (Magnesium) turbo Questions

Anyone have personal experience running this particular turbo? The guys in the U.K. seem to like this turbo for its spool and response. The earlier models had problems with the magnesium compressor wheel breaking., but later models were revised?

Thinking of running this in an EVO 8 for responsiveness not max HP. Give me your thoughts guys...

If I remember correctly you have to run stock boost levels to make this turbo last.

I have it in my car. The 70 serial one was the one with problems.I had it in my car from the beginning and it broke at 4000 miles, no modifications.

Then I replaced it with a 71 serial mag turbo. Hasn't broken yet, running for 5000 miles with mods on ~91 octane.

For more info, search my thread "blown turbo on stock JDM evo 9"

The Mag/TiAl factory IX turbo is bound to be a quick spooler. But, at $1849, it seems a tad overpriced IMO. Is it worth it? The Green fitted with a 9.0 cm turbine housing should spool about as quick and have better midrange and topend potential for less money.

if ur want the same spoolup on a TME w/out the failure + the ability to run higher boost (non mag wheel)u can do this BB conversion from EVO400:

sparky- this would be a dd so i would go with mild cams like hks 264s would a green w/ 9.0 cm hotside be a waste since it wouldnt reach its top end potental w/o more aggressive cams?

a more cost effective option would be this:

lil more topend then the EVO 8 TME(50hp) & less than 1/2 the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the currency conversion would be $1138 USD & the surging u mentioned is what happens when adding the 4" shroud, but shroud is for aftermarket ECU only...

there are a couple guys i know running the stock turbo, bb kit, 3" & 4" shroud but they run MoTeC. guy w/3" shroud is making 400whp on stock motor. guy w/4" shroud is making 450whp.

the FP green works real well from what i'm hearing & is the most effective stock turbo upgrade. it is around $1700 though...

There are a couple of our British cousins over on LancerRegister running the Green with BB upgrade. I haven't reasearched this option though as I just can't afford it.

I have ordered the 9.0 housing for my Green from FP though. I hope to have it on in a couple weeks. My previous turbo was a TiAl JDM RS VIII turbo with a 9.8 housing so I learned to value a fast spooling turbo.

I too run on 91 octane so I'm limited to about 22 PSI. The Green with the 10.5 housing just wasn't cutting it for me spoolwise. So, I decided to order the 9.0 Housing from FP.

The Green with the 10.5 and my cams set to -2/-3 doesn't hit 24 PSI until about 3500 RPM. I think that if I advance the cams to +1/-1, I should be able to get it to spool to 24# by 3300 RPM. But, this doesn't compare to my TiAl VIII turbo which would hit 24 PSI by about 2700-2900 RPM.

At any rate, I am hoping that the 9.0 housing will get the Green spooling up to 24# by 3000 RPM, or else I will take a match to it or use it as a doorstop.

I don't have any dyno sheet. I have done some amateurish tuning by myself. So I don't think I am at the optimum level yet. I am getting tuned by a Pro soon. Then I will be able to post DLL graphs.

At the moment I am hitting 22-23 psi by 3300 rpm in 3rd gear (have datalog if needed). I am sure with proper tuning the power will come in sooner.
