I have ordered new valve stem seals for both the intake and exhaust side. They will be installed this Saturday and well see what happens. It took a few days after the initial install for it to start smoking, so I might not have any feedback for a few days after the stem replacement.

Since the install (I do not believe this problem happened beforehand), I have noticed a puff of blueish smoke when initially starting the car and then a trail of blueish smoke under WOT. The car has about 7800 miles on it. From all that I've read thus far, blue exhaust smoke normally indicates that a seal of some sort is failing and oil is going where it shouldn't. This mainly happens with high mileage cars, but this car only has 7800 miles so engine fatigue is not the culprit.

When installing the SuperTech valvetrain, the OEM valve stem seals were removed using a valve stem seal puller. The stem seals were inspected and thought to be in good condition and reused. Is it possible that one or more of these seals has failed and oil is passing through? Would that cause blue smoke? I believe I should check the spark plugs to see if they are fouled.

Thoughts?

YOU CANNOT USE STOCK VALVE STEM SEALS WITH SUPERTECH DUALS.

They require the H6.6 smaller seals in order to clearance properly. The springs are likely tearing the seals apart as they are too big.

It states specifically to use these seals on Supertech's information.

WTF? That is great to know...now. Now I have an even bigger beef with a vendor on this forum, which I am not going to specifically call out, which did not tell me about needing to do anything with the valve stem seals when installing the SuperTech dual valve spring setup.

Do you sell these smaller seals? If so I need to order them ASAP!

You should hope your wife doesn't read these boards for the lack of research you did before you started this project.

I am glad to see your last sentence where you said you are kidding. It is not my responsibility to research what parts are needed for this type of upgrade. It is the vendor's responsibility to advise all potential customers as to exactly what parts are required and what parts are suggested for any given mod.

Yeah that!

And yes, she does read the boards and certainly doesn't blame him for the issue.

Ha, ha- good to see the humor was taken well, got to be careful with wit, sometimes there's cultural barriers and offence, which finally brings me to a question:

Who was the vendor BTW that sold you the product without mentioning H6.6 seals were needed? You would assume they should know about their product applications

Yes it is your valve stem seals...get new ones for intake and exhaust.....this is a must
no matter how many miles you have on the car especially if you are changing out to new valves... another problem could be turbo seals going bad, but from what you told us I'm betting that it's your valve seals...

Good Luck...

I am not going to call them out on this forum. I will call them and express my dismay over the situation.

I ordered the SuperTech valve stem seals and should receive them within a few days. The plan is to install them on Saturday and see what happens. Again, it might take a few days to determine the actual results. When the OEM seals are pulled, I will provide some pics if they look "mangled" as an FYI sort of thing.

Great news! I received the SuperTech valve stem seals yesterday and my buddy came over today and installed them. The first thing we noticed during the "tear down" was that oil was on top of the pistons, so the stem seals were definitely leaking. It turns out that the exhaust stem seals had taken the biggest beating, and were essentially "floating" on the valve stem. They were removed by hand without any effort! The intake valve stem seals were on nice and tight. This is the reason why the spark plugs weren't getting fouled. All of the seals had take a pretty good beating--some of them were almost torn apart and all of them had some serious scarring on the outside.

The SuperTech valve stem seals are on and I am not getting any blue smoke at this point. I believe this issue has been resolved, but since it took a few days for the OEM seals to fail I am crossing my fingers.

I am very grateful that my friend was able to help me resolve this issue. He is a stand-up guy and has great mechanical skills. I look forward to his continued work on my wife's Evo.

Thanks Aby! Within the next few months I am hoping to get your 65mm TB and intake port-match!

No, we did not do a pull together. We took a nice little drive and all he could say is "man your car is pulling hard!" Seeing as how you beat him pretty handidly, I think you and I are do for a rematch, only this time I expect to pull on you even harder since the cams are in.

^ in case i have never told you....................i hate mivecs

maybe we can see how things compare @ the dyno in santee?

being a e9 turbo & mivec + being lighter too, you'll just yank me from a slow roll. not to mention, your 3rd gear is shorter too....i am just looking for every excuse in the book, arent I?

i will try to make it to the Q & see how the baby seat-mobil runs in a 1/8 on 91octane

LOL! In that case you double-hate the Evo Xs...seeing as how the MIVEC now controls both cams!

Naji (Looney Tuning) will be reverting Andrea's Evo back to the ECU-controlled boost control in combination with his special restrictor pill next Saturday. I will let you know how that turns out. From there I will head to Reese Tuning for some pulls on his new dynojet. Based on the mysterious mechanic's results ( ) I should see around 380awhp on 91 octane.
