Another Engine Whine Thread

2006 Evolution IX

I recently noticed this whine from my car. I've looked over transfer case threads but I don't think this is it. It may just be the normal sound of the engine, but because it was something I just recently noticed I'm not sure.

The sound comes in first and second gears, and only between 2 and 3 thousand RPMs. its a very whiney winding up sound that stops right after 3k RPM and in other gears is non existent. At higher speeds, which is where I've most typically heard that the transfer case noise will be, the winding sound is also non existent. This sound is not unlike what I would expect the car to sound in reverse.

Does anyone else's evolution produce this sound?
also searching the forums I came across something similar sound called "transmission error," but I'm not sure if that is what this is. I'm hoping to take it to the dealership, but if anyone has any better suggestions I'm all ears.

The car has about 14,000 miles on it, has base flash, cone style filter, manual boost controller, and then things like turbo timer, hids etc.
I change the oil every 2500-3000 miles, and also recently changed the transfer case fluid and transmission fluid, at the dealership with the stock fliuds

I'll try to get a video up on youtube later too. Sigh I just wish the car would just stay solid without me having to worry about anything like this. Thanks for you guys' help, sorry if similar threads are up I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything conclusive. Anyone else with similar issues holler haha.

Evo's use spur gears for first and second gear. All Evo's make this noise. Hearing the transfer case (very slightly) at low speed can also be normal. If you're not hearing a whine in 4th and 5th gear on the highway, you should be ok.

If it's an obvious differance froms days before and absolutly obnoxious, I'd have it looked at.

I had that with the stock fluids but after replacing them with amsoil extreme duty synthetic fluids that whine went away. So I guess change the TC fluid and see if it cures your problem
