I'll sell you mine for $699

You said the stock IC was slightly damaged? does that mean it absolutely needs to be replaced? If this is true and your really not planning to mod the car otherwise, plus your concerned/parinoid about your warranty, then find a nice used stock IC. With all the after market IC's out there and so many people modifing there cars. You should be able to find a nice used stock IC for a very reasonable price.

If I have the RMR intake, turbo-back exhaust, intercooler hardpipe and ECU flash, what kind of gains from a larger intercooler should I expect?

to get optimum results you would really need to get your ECU reflashed again... but you should see in the area of about 15-20hp with the AMS unit... maybe more considering you already upgraded to the IC hard pipe kit...

The only test data I have seen shows the stock intercooler has only a 2-3 PSI pressure drop on a modified car running 22-23 PSI, (not bad at all).
kinda hard to get numbers like that since the IC is not really doing what it is designed to do, while sitting still on a dyno...

It was only slightly damaged, and I could probably leave everything as-is and it would be fine. But I figure since it is damaged I'd look into whether to replace it. At first I was thinking of just trying to get a used stock IC, but with the prices people have been asking it seems to make more sense to me to spend an extra $100 or $200 to get a bigger intercooler. So unless someone wants to sell me their stock IC real cheap, I think it's either something like the AMS unit or nothing.

Anyone else care to chime in about whether a larger IC on a stock car will do anything? Opinions thus far have been mixed, but I'd love to hear what others have to say. Thanks.

These were not entirely serious offers, honestly a reasonable price on a used stock IC should be $300-$400, in another 6-9 months you will be able to find them for around $200 or less.
With all the people upgrading there cars, there will be quite a few of these things sitting in peoples garages. I have a bunch of stock FD RX7 parts that I will sell/give away real cheap.

hmmm........

New Import Tuner magazine. XS engineering tested a EVO with new intercooloer and dyno after install with a gain of only 1 hp at the wheel. Not enough for me to drop 1,000

Yikes...I just saw that, too. Sticking with my stock IC is starting to sound like a better and better idea!

Yeah that was on a dyno.

Without the car moving through the air like driving, that means it still made a gain. I have a road dyno and if anyone gets an IC in my area I am happy to test it to see what it really does for the car.

Again the usefulness of this mod will nto be recognised at a stock level, but when you start modding, it will keep crazy boost and heat levels stable and acceptable, so the car will have low knock, and ample timing, that is the name of the turbo game.

It would seem that if your Ic wasn't running efficiently, you would actually lose power from all the pressure that it would have to build through the higher volume intercooler. Yes the temps are much lower, only because you are increasing area of heat to disipate. You better bet would be CO2 spray!(much cheaper, and you would only use it when you feel necessary.

In testing I have done/seen, the larger intercooler should actually do a little better on chassis dyno with limited air flow, as compared to real world. With similiar insufficient air flow the smaller intercooler will heat up faster for a dyno pull.
I do not think anyone is questioning that a larger IC will have improver air flow and cooling efficiency. It's just that the stock unit works so well in stock/mildy modified cars, there just does not seem to be much benefit for the money. Unless you plan to go with a larger turbo and make over 350-400HP.

That's my concern - I am at 350 now and thinking of some other mods that would take me way over 400. I am thinking I should stick with stock for now or would I be better off upgrading now with the knowledge that more mods are coming?
