drtalon, what symptoms did you have? I have the 5th gear grind only at really high RPM, and also recently started having trouble shifting into reverse like someone mentioned above. Sometimes it just won't go into reverse, I can only pull the shifter like half way down. I have to start letting the clutch out really slowly, then it suddenly falls into place. If I leave it at the halfway point and try to drive, it grinds & pops into neutral. But it doesn't seem that any amount of force will get it into reverse when this happens. This didn't start happening until I had close to 3k miles, now it happens maybe 30% of the time. These are only minor annoyances that I can live with, but I'm obviously concerned that my tranny might be a dud.

Oh, and of course I have the 3rd gear decel noise, but I don't even care about that because it's rare that I decelerate hard enough in 3rd to cause it. But still...

well my 4th gear grind is gone lol, combination on the floor mat and thick soled sandals. I bought some new thin soled shoes today and it now shifts perfectly. Now this is probably the gayest thing ever posted, lol, but I highly recommend these shoes: http://www.shoes.com/product.asp?p=5...riant_id=03450 They are very thin soled and the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned. I know this is corny, but I highly recommend them, especially since the clutch in the Evo has to be all the way to the floor at high rpms to avoid grinding while shifting which I have come to find out. With these shoes I can feel if the clutch pedal is all the way to the floor or not.

I have the same problem, my 4th and 5th gear grinds abit at wot at anything above 6000rpm. Whats funny is that my 2nd gear and third gear would grind sometimes and at about 3500 miles it just went away totally. I can shift at 7400 rpms in 1st to 2nd gear shifts with no problem. Im hoping that more miles will help the 4th and 5th gear grind.

Same 4th gear grind and tech at Mitsu tells me i am speedshifting and abusing the car. BS He put my CM stage III in and after he drove it he said that it is fine when you drive it like a normal car. BS Now we have a normal car that we should drive like beatches all the time. That is why we all bought EVOs for 30 k to drive like a senior citizen. I am waiting to talk to some rep in the near future. i was still in the car when the tech shifted and he decreased rpms on 4th gear shifts and depressed the clutch for a long time. No mods on my car and 3700 miles.Never officially raced and minimal launching.Raced from a roll a couple of times up to about 100 mph that is it. they need to step up to the plate fast or lemon law is in this cars future. I still love this car but the service dept are trying to weasle out of everything.

My Evo has Rod Millen cat back exhaust and down pipe with the stock catalytic. I first noticed grinding going into 5th at 2500 miles. It is an intermittent problem but getting worse. It now has 4300 miles. I will let you know how I do with the dealer.

If my car breaks agian its a lemon. It has nothing to do with any modifications nor driving style. It is purely a car issue. Also is said to happen ususally withing 2000 miles each time. So far I have about 750 miles on the new trans.
My transmission was just rebuit by the very capable John Shepherd of Shep Racing / DSM fame - and confirmed that there is a potential flaw in the design of final drive. He is working on pictures and a small write up, which I will post in the near future. Stay tuned.

I had to have my 5th gear syncrho replaced at 3000 miles. It is a factory defect--has nothing to do with the way you drive. You will most likely need the same thing done. The good news is that the dealer will go ahead and install an aftermarket clutch for ya at no charge while they have everything apart--at least mine did for me.

Does this apply to all dealerships? I'm just wondering if all dealerships are aware if it is indeed a factory defect as I now started having grinds in 5th gear at high rpms. And I guess your right about the way you drive. I ****fted from 4th to 5th gear as I shifted from the rest of the gears somewhat slow but not to the point where I slam on the gears quickly and it did it to me twice.

I can't speak for all dealerships but it really is the right thing for htem to do. I mean, they already have everything out (including the stock clutch) so why can't they just put a different clutch in when they reassemble the car?

For those of you with new trannies,,, did you have to wait till yours bit the dust , or did they fix it once the grinding was too much?

Mine is grinding more and more and I just dont want it to break down on me when Im out of town or somthing. 8,000 miles here, and it has grinded since day one.

I just talked to Mitsubishi in Riverside, CA and they did a routine on me about abuse, etc. Does anyone have experience with this dealer and getting a transmission warranteed?
