best way to clean out Intake manifold
best way to clean out Intake manifold
I want to remove all carbon buildup from my ported IM before bolting it back on - yeah, I am blocking off EGR so it doesnt happen again.
Is there a DIY method to do this or just get it hot tanked somewhere? Thanks!

I'm assuming this is the one off your car?
If so, I used brake cleaner and a small toilet bowl brush... brake cleaner is good because it dries instantly. Toilet bowl brush well it's rough enough to no damage the metal...

Did you put the brush thru the TB hole and scrub away?

Gasket remover probably will give me cancer. The carbon literally bubbles up and melts away. Its great if your lazy. You really don't even have to scrub it. Just spray, walk away for 5 minutes. Spray some more... walk away... spray again... walk away... then rinse it in hot water. At this point 80% will be gone. A couple more shots on the tough spots and it will be perfectly clean. Use REALLY hot water. As you flush something like the IM. It will start to get nice and warm. Which is nice because then you can shake it. Set it down - come back 3 minutes later and its 90% dry. And you can start spraying again.
Beware of aircraft stripper! It will seriously F! you up. And NOT in a good way.
Also... don't try to "hurry it along" by blasting a part covered in gasket remover with brake cleaner. Atleast... not if you enjoy being able to breathe.

well it would be best if you had a parts cleaner bin and had it soaking in parts cleaner solvent, or I have cleaned a few by using brake cleaner, it was tough to still get in all the areas of the intake manifold since it dried very quickly.
Good aluminum cleaning solvents are noncorrosive nonpolar thinners, strippers (as mentioned), and some inert chloro/flouro hydrocarbons. Just cleaned 60,000 miles of intercooler crud with oderless mineral spirits. Made the inside shiny and the rinse collected looked like printer ink. I can actually hear the air going through the intercooler again.
