Car wont go into 5th or reverse.. and got stuck in 4th.

Ive been driving the car around on a failing clutch for about 4 weeks now. went about 40 miles on it that way minus the ride home. (its my daily driver) But just now I noticed it wouldnt get out of 4th unless I shut the car off... same with 5th and reverse.... is the clutch finally gone? or is there other damage? cause it works fine wen the car is shut off....

anyone?

I've not heard of this before but I think an appropriate place to start looking would be the control connections on the transmission housing. Sometimes the bushings bind up or it could be that something is preventing the arms from moving all the way like the cable came off the clip or something.

Good luck.

wen the car is off though, it goes into gear just fine. Could it really be that my clutch just finally stopped working? because it is blown, ive been driving it with about 90% ware for a while now.

Oh I took it that you couldn't get it into gear with the car off my bad

Yeah you could be synchro locked right now time to replace that clutch!

Sounds like the adjustment on the clutch line/pedal or synchro locked. When I had the 5th/reverse lockout, it was the synchros that were damaged. Found that the 5th gears synchro and slider were toast. Ended up having to have all the gears replaced.

I see this failure in my shop more so than any other gear set. 5th/R do not receive the lubrication the rest of the trans sees. I would be willing to say that your trans is low on fluid or has fluid in it that needed to be changed. However now the damage is done to the hub/sleeve for 5/R and will need to be replaced.
