Intercooler tests

Does anybody have any tests/data that would allow me to compare different intercoolers?

I'm specifically interested in comparing the Buschur vs. ETS.

TIA

We got some good logs from a 67mm EVO that was on our Dynojet last week showing a 60-70 degree reduction in AITs at the top of a pull from an eBay replica IC to our 4" intercooler that Lucas from English Racing will send me to post this evening. You can then see how our core performs separate of any others as well In reality, both will do a great job so the most reasonable way to make a decision would be be based on endtank design, fitment and pricing

Here's a run at the track in my car at 30psi on pump gas. Ambient temperature is about 80*F. So that's a 4*F rise in temperature from start to finish....I'd say it's pretty efficient.

Also, here is a bunch of tuning David has done over the years showing intercooler data. Good read.

specific posts to look at - 3, 14, 33, and 34. Compare those posts vs. my log above.

The Buschur race IC definitely performs well, but I think your 4* rise is a bit misleading.

If the ambient temps were about 80F and your intake temps before the run were about 114F or so (eyeballing your graph), then that is just hot air being drawn in from under the hood.

A truer measure would be to either use the ambient temp (alhtough this would bring in the turbo efficiency as well), or use the lowest temp from the run to the temp at the end.

In your run, it looks like you went from about 108F to about 115F. Still only a rise of 7F and very good, but how much of that was due to the hot air that you were sucking in before the run even started? Your intake temps when moving without boost should be close to ambient, or a few degrees above.

If you could do this, it would be a great test:

Do another multi-gear run on a closed road somewhere, but start it aleady at a nice ruising speed, like 30 MPH or so. That way, the intake temps should be close to or at ambient, rather than being already at an artificially high number. Then, you would get the true rise in AITs from the pull. Doing the pull from a dead stop makes the IC look better than it actually is.

you could also use water to bring the core closer to ambient temps however this just throughs in another variable.
Testing cores is VERY hard to do on a car, to get true results the use of an engine dyno would be required so that you can control ALL the variables! (turbo, ambient temp, air flow to the core, monitor flow and temp at the TB)
just get a core that flows well toss a meth kit on and call it a day.

Totally agree with l2r99gst... this is what I never understood about DB saying how amazing it was speaking of the delta from the bottom of the pull to the top. It's the net increase over ambient that seems the most logical to quote.

I run an APS intercooler with GT35R and get about 40c temps across the board on a 4th gear pull. Before the pull cruising I'm around 41-43c. So intake temps go DOWN for me doing a pull. I have autronic datalogs I've posted if you search.

Ambient btw for me is 30c.

Thanks Slorice, the information you put up is good. The link to our site has a lot of comparisons of different turbos and intercooler combinations posted there.

i never weighed it versus the $$$$ i used to run. weight never crossed my mind.

did you see what i wrote about inlet temps? much better than my old $$$$.

anyway i think it's a good cooler. too bad it's not been tested as far as i know.
