I Miss the Low End Torque

I almost got *creamed* pulling into my subdivision (unprotected left across 3 lanes of traffic) today and I remember how easy it was to do in the SRT-4.

It's not to say that I miss the SRT-4; the thing was falling apart after 36K miles but it had serious low end torque. (Putting that torque to the ground was an exercise in futility in 1st gear but that's another story altogether).

How can we get more low end (think from idle to 3K) torque out of our Evos? In my head, the answer is just more displacement but I've searched and I can't find any answers to my cravings.

If I have to get a stroker kit, I will - I've searched all over the forums and everyone who's gotten a stroker seems to go big (new bigger turbo, etc.) and seems to be looking for the big HP numbers.

I just want to be able to get across the intersection without doing a launch with the wheels turned (talk about scary). I don't care about revving past the stock redline or making more power - I just want the torque curve to be a lot better from idle to 3K; it would also help with the transition that feels like you just turned on an afterburner when the lag dissipates after 3500.

If a cheapie SRT-4 can do it, it seems like we should be able to also.

Ideas?

9.8 hotside with tommi makinen turbo and an O2 housing(Megan Racing, Ebay)
other than that you could gut it, put a 2.3, or do what I mentioned above.

go stroker or for a cheaper option look into the 6.5 tme turbo....also if you check out some of the rally cars they run restricted turbo intakes that give them mad torque.

If you want a cheap option, then bolt either a 9.8, or even better, a 9.0 turbine housing onto your IX turbo in place of the stock 10.5cm piece. This will get the turbo spooling way quicker, although you'll lose a bit of topend flow. You can get the 9.0 housing from Forced Performance for a couple hundred bucks.

+1 what mitdrx said regarding the intake. Are you running a short ram intake? If so, maybe use the oem with a decent drop in or use a Blitz intake panel. just my .02

Wow, is that intersection really that busy?? How can civics get across if you barely can make it through?

Not to bash you or anything but if it's that dangerous, maybe you should start talking to an official from the highway/transportation department and make them place a streetlight or something. I know what you're going through cuz that's how I had my first and only accident on my first car, an eclipse, crossing a really busy intersection in the middle of a traffic jam.

Guy in the left lane gave me the signal to cross the intersection and my car being lowered, I couldn't see the right lane clearly to get a good look at the situation. I decided to go ahead and cross it as fast as I could but what I didn't expect was an caravan traveling around 40-50 mph running through that lane and by the time I saw the van, it was too late. Months later, the state decided to put a traffic light on that intersection and just like that, no more accidect around that area.

If you want to sacrifice top end power for more low end torque then go ahead and buy a smaller turbo or a stroker kit should help you on that department as well although it's a more expensive choice. The cheapest choice would be to wait for the state to help you out in this matter as well as the community that has to go through the same thing everyday. I bet that together, you can convince them to act as quickly as possible on this matter.

Ok, I think I "spoke" too much .

2.5l SBR stroker. On another note i doubt i would change my whole setup just because of 1 instersection. Is it worth all the extra money just so you can zoom into your subdivision. Just wait the extra few seconds for it to be wide open...Not unless you need to go to the bathroom or something..Just my opinion.

Work on clutch technique. Keep the revs up and slowly engage the clutch, right before it bogs, get on the gas. If that won't get you through, the full on 5k launch should work.
