Lightbulb big turbo gas mileage?

I cant help but think that a bigger turbo would help the gas mileage of the evo.It seems like its always spooling. I would like to know what people with 3076's and 35's ect are getting for mileage. Am I nuts to think the cost of a turbo upgrade be offset by the cost in gas?

You have to also take into consideration how you drive the car.

I get about 26 to 27mpg on the highway and about 13 around town because I can't keep my foot out of it. I'm running a full AMS built motor with a 35r.

I have a AMS HTA3076r and I get 300-320 miles per tank of 100 octane... on 93 octane I get 240-280 miles per tank

Granted it wasn't an evo, but a 2G DSM.

Stock injectors + GT2871R + stock cams = ~23mpg average
950cc injectors + T67 + FP2 cams = ~32mpg average

Pretty substantial difference

it seems like big turbo kit improves the gas mileage if you don't step on it... is it b/c big turbo spool much later?

the reason big turbos SEEM to increase gas milage is that you know when you spooling vs a stock turbo everytime u put your foor down alil ur in boost... so bigger turbos only call for more gas at higher rpms when boost in kicked in...

this is what it seems like... just my thought on it

aka easier to stay outta boost=less gas

Usually the larger turbo's open up the exhaust flow more, increasing the ease to push out the exhaust gas. This in turn increases the efficiency of the motor. I think this is why MPG's increase.

Our cars hit full boost at 3,200 rpms. I dont think spool is a large factor for our car.

with the stock turbo my overall average was about 16-17 mpg. with my buschur 30r kit it went up to about 17-19mpg over all average. about 23 mpg if stay at 75-80 mph on the freeway for a long time but i average about 18mpg now with the 30r. slightly better millage than the stock turbo.

i think te big turbo eliminates that slightly getting on it you can do with a stock turbo. once you have some real lag you pretty much brace yourself if you plan on boosting haha

Justboosted02 has the right idea.

You can cruise around without getting the boost up much easier with a large turbo. On the 2G DSM, the ECU would go open loop any time you went above about 2 psi. With the smaller turbo, I would get above that just pulling out of drive ways in reverse. With the larger turbo, you have to provoke it to get above that 2-3 psi limit. The car would go down the freeway at 2-3 psi accelerating very well while in closed loop with the larger turbo...still having ample power to overtake your common Toyota Camry.

The big turbo seems to reduce your tendency to really get on it too. A GT35Rish turbo will make mid 400s on pumpgas pretty easily on fairly low boost. 400 HP is enough power to double the posted speed limit pretty easily without even realizing it. I know I consciously found myself not getting on it to avoid getting another ticket.
