Unhappy Blew my stage 2 shep transfercase tonight.

Update: 7-7-07 I just spoke to John and he told me that the issue was NOT A TRANSFER CASE PROBLEM/ MALFUNCTION ISSUE, BUT RATHER THE OUTPUT SHAFT WAS THE CULPRIT. Apperently what happened is that the out put shaft snapped and shoved the diff housing through the transfer case end cover. Again this happened when i tried to launch my car, and i accidentally dumped the clutch rather than slip it.

Just as the title says i manged to blow my shep transfercase tonight, the car bogged followed by a loud boom. A corner chunk of of the housing blew right off. :crap hopefully the transmission is ok since i'm leaking red and blue fluid. I will post more pics when i get a chance to get under the car. Sucks too cause my car was running like a champ.

6/29/08 UPDATE: I mangaged to get under the car right now and looks like it was my LSD that grenaded since all the damage seems to occur where the passanger side axle meets the x-case pics can be seen below and page 1 post #'s 5 and 7. As you can see in all the pics the 2 different color fluids. Does the lsd have its own seperate fluid reservoir since the bolt in the pic says oil on it.

6/30/08 UPDATE: Just spoke with John and i sent him the pics. This was his input of what might have happened:
" That is a case failure and I have to say not very common. I can only assume the car has had some wheel hop on some launches and weakened the case but it is possible the lsd broke and and pushed the viscous out the side. The lsd may be fine though and hopefully the ring and pinion is ok as well. It is probably worth sending it in to see if it can be repaired."

I want to thank John for taking my calls and emails and immediately responding to what happened. He said he would help me out as much as possible to try and fix my current t-case, and if that is not possible, he would help me out as much as he can on a new one. So far hes been a great guy to deal with and has great customer service. I know i will be doing business with him in the future.

Share your setup with us and your launch technique. I figure it like this, AWD is gonna grip so I slip the **** out of the clutch. Clutches are cheaper than trannies and transfer cases! I'd rather replace my clutch every other year or so then have to buy a new transfer case. But when I do it will be a Shep! LOL

you wouldnt imagine the load that the TC and tranny carries when launching her, if yu did you would never launch your car by dumping clutch or even slipping

Nail on the head.. When you dump the clutch the slack in the drivetrain doesnt get taken up and you will pop something.. Trust me i have gotten anxious at the line and done it more than 1x.. Doesnt matter who builds it when you do that..

slack ( lash / backlash ) take your axles and twist them back and foward you will see and feel the axle moving back and foward,,,,, if someone can do the math there would show thousands of inch punds of load being carried by the internal components in a twist motion

let not get to scientific here,,,,,,, fix it and move foward,,,

I did preload the clutch a bit and when i reacted to slip the clutch i tried to slip it too fast and ended up dumping it, i did realize it at that moment that i did dump and tried to push the clutch back it but to keep it from shocking the drivetrain, but it was too late.

Hopefully shep can give me a good deal on a new one.
