Who needs a clutch anyways???

I was driving like a grandma at 5am and all of a sudden my clutch pedal went all the way to the floor and stayed there. The clutch pressure was totally gone. when i looked under the hood the brake/clutch fluid was very low and i found a leak at the slave cylinder. Is this a common prob? and what can i do to prevent it from happening again? i was lucky that i was close to my moms house so i was able to pull into her driveway.
