Been having ALOT of problems recently with spark blowout miss-fires with the stock cops.
Having swapped Evo 7/8 ecus into Evo 1-3s without any issues at all, I though Id try the DSM separate ignitor/coil route, but with much much larger coils.
I did a bit of research and found some powerful coils from a different vehicle, which had similar coil resistance and charge times to the DSM coils and the stock cops.
The coils themselves are approx three times the size of the stock cops and around twice the size of the DSM coils.
They are Mobiletron CG-05 coils and are normally used for

Buick 1986-2001
Cadillac 1993-1999
Chevrolet 1987-2001
Oldsmobile 1986-2001
Pontiac 1987-2001

I wired in the ignitor and coils and the car started perfectly, in fact better than it had been starting and I did a small drive to check part throttle etc and logged a couple of lowish boost runs to make sure nothing was out of the ordinary.
The car ran beautifully with no issues at all, and very very smooth.

Set up on car is:
2005 Mitsi Airtrek turbo (Evo 7 motor etc)
Stock ECU
Stock Block with head studs
Stock Evo 7 intake manifold
Gt3076 0.82 housing 44mm Tial
Kelford 272 cams
880cc injectors
NGK BR8ES gapped 0.027
Custom meth injection setup with Zeitronix safety system etc etc

Mobiletron CG-05 coils x2

Evo 3 (DSM) ignitor
Eagle 8mm DSM leads





Did a 24psi run with 93oct only and had no missfires or hesitation and the car pulled very very well throught the rev range.

Did a 30psi run with 93oct and 1200cc of 100% meth and again no issues with igniting that mixture at all


All logs were perfect and I was able to finish tuning both boost pressures as I couldnt do clean runs prior to the new coils.

Overall Im unbelievably happy as my car is the weapon its supposed to be. It pulls so hard and smoothly, Im so happy I decided to try out this solution.

I was going to go for the very nice COP units some of the vendors sell, but as the coils cost me US$45 and the ignitor was free, I couldnt resist giving it a go.

yes- but much much stronger spark and quick recovery time.

I will work on step-by-step instructions over the next couple of days, so it can be added to the "how to"section.

Its going to be a great way of fixing alot of peoples ignition issues. If it doesnt help some people, it didnt cost much and the coils could still be sold on.

For futher testing for use on stock ecu I tried it on a different vehicle (stock Evo 7) with just temp wiring and it ran perfectly, even though this vehicle didnt have any ignition issues.

wow! good to know! i might do that.. good DYI and so any burn wire or blow short circirt?

Like any DIY electrical work, you have to make sure you do things properly. Its pretty hard to muck up and have issues.

Very nice, I will watch with anticipation. Total cost?
