Noob here and I just want to know what is a knock, how do I find out, how can I tell if mine motor is knocking, are they good or bad, and it is something like the Honda's loose valve?

Thanks.......................

knock is detonation, its a bad thing, and you can tell by logging data on your car using MitsuLogger, EVOscan, etc. Once you get three knock counts, the computer will start to pull timing to protect the motor. It you have a high knock count, the car will rev up but not have any power because timing is being pulled.

Do some searching on here, youll find more than you ever wanted to know about knock

so the only way you can tell is by using datalogger?
what about this I have mine IX tuned and I noticed the rpm is a bit higher about 200, before its at 800 rpm idle. I did searched and the one I found did really help much. any link?

Thank alots btw.

I don't think you have unwanted detonation. I'd have your tuner data log your car and adjust idle speed but we really need more information about exactly what's happening with your car.

That would mean your idle was raised - very simple change in the ECU. Idle RPM is in a different galaxy than knock...

Aside from loss of power because of timing pull, you really wont know.
I dont understand what you are saying about idle, it raise 200 RPM after you had it tuned? If so, not that is not knock, thats just your tuner raising the idle so he doesnt have to deal with complaints about peoples cars not idling right, or if you have cams, usually you want to raise the idle a little bit. Knock happens mainly under boost and spool up. Essentially the air is to hot, or not enough fuel, or to much timing causes knock. Basically what is happening is the air/ fuel mixture is combusting before we want it to.

The better place for knock dissussions is the tuning threads, ECUflash. But I understand, I try the search thing and most of the time its terrible, and I never find what Im really looking for.....
