IX Turbo Installed on VIII Impressions...

Well I had a IX turbo laying around and decided to put it on my Evo VIII.
It's like a night/day of a difference even without a tune. Finished it up last night, I will be going out to log a few pulls.

Install was fairly quick, few hours. Everything went smooth.

HKS 280's will be installed this upcoming weekend, will update this thread!

Specs:

IX Turbo
IX Extremely Ported Stock Manifold
IX Extremely Ported 10.5 Hotside
IX Extremely Ported Wastegate Outlet (Was done to prevent Boost Creep)
3'' Stainless Steel O2 Housing.

All porting was done by me.

P/S- For all evo owners, You do not need an install kit to overcome this swap. Thats is all. Suggest just buying a IX Turbo with an outlet pipe

Here are some pics

Thanks!

What is in the VIII install kit that you don't need? What are your thoughts on buying a used turbo?

If you are removing your VIII turbo and installing a used IX there is nothing from the VIII turbo that I switched over to the IX turbo. If you purchase just the turbo and no coolant lines, simply switch the lines from the VIII to the IX. Your return line is the same. I would purchase the return line gaskets from Mitsubishi. Got them at cost price along with outlet pipe bolts for $3.

As far as a used turbo, make sure it has zero to no shaft play, and that the blades spin freely. You should be fine. The turbo I installed has 20k, no play.

I did a swap as well.. I did not purchase the conversion kit either.. It works fine, no leaks as long as you buy the new gaskets. Was totally simple and huge difference between the VIII and IX turbo.. running GSC 272's and ported exhaust side and trying to put on the new separated wastegate/exhaust O2 housing...

just curious of how much gain there is between VIII turbo and IX turbo...like 20HP...I can't see any more than that...maybe under the curve its different as well...Would also like to see the difference between IX tubro and FP Green...as I think its only about 20-30HP difference as well...

goog to here your results!!! My VIII is in the shop now getting the ix turbo put on. Im getting really excited now! You should look into getting a aftermarket intercooler! I could feel a difference without a tune. Im getting tuned after the turbo so im expecting a pretty big differnece. Since the last flash I have added ported ix turbo, injen intake and piping, and byc intercooler. I can't Wait. And i just put some new falken azinis rt615s. Taking it to the Import Face Off this weeknd at KCIR!!!

yea i helped with this swap. my arm in like third to last pic lol.

n e ways, went about as smooth as posible. all done with simple tools, a jack and 2 people basicly. havn't been in the car yet but with the 280 cams that are coming soon it sure has alot of potential. def recomend anybody thinking of doing this to do it. remove radiator, downpipe and a few lines. Then the bolts on the manifold and the one for the o2 housing brace. and ur out with ur stock turbo
