Question

I have a stock Evo 9 MR. I want to get a catback.
I read a ton of posts regarding exhausts, but I haven't found an answer to this question:
Can a 3" catback bolt on to the stock catalytic converter (since the cat pipe is smaller 2.5" I think). Has anyone tried it? If yes, what brand?
I don't want to get a TBE right now, just the catback, maybe in a year or 2.

Any 3" catback exhaust should bolt right up to the rear flange of the factory cat. That´s why it is called "catback". The bolt holes on the catback´s flange should be the same diameter and the distance between bolt hole centerlines should be identical to those on the catalytic´s flange.

But, I´d suggest that you at least get a 100 cell high flow cat, such as the one offered by Milspec. In fact, you should just spring for the complete turboback right off the bat, and get a tune.

I don't want to spend $1200 for a tbe and tune. I just want to spend about 400 to 500 on a good quality catback. It's my daily driver, and I need a reliable car. I don't plan to modify the engine anytime soon. Some people are saying that there are catbacks that taper to 2.5 at the end which will fit perfectly and that the 3" might not "fit" right.
I just want to know if anyone has done it. I am looking at the Megan Racing catback which is 3" and the greddy ti-c.
