Help/thoughts

Well, I've got an 04 Evo 8 and am having my first prob ever. Car is stock and has 115K on it. First, temp gauge goes up to hot, then settles at about 3/4 toward hot when on interstate and stays. At idle, temp appears to stay normal. But that isn't what worries me as much as the next prob (which may or may not be related). EX. When I'm doing 70 (5th gear) on the interstate and I give it WOT, when boost kicks in, the RPMs jump up then return back as if the transmission/turbo slips. It does this in other gears as well but most noticeable in 4th or 5th at interstate speeds. Sorry, I'm not the most technical or mechanically inclined to describe it any other way...thinking of taking it in to the stealership but wanted to get some input here if possible first. Thanks in adv.

the rev thing sounds like clutch. the temp thing doesn't. i am not a mechanical expert either. so let's see what others have to say.

The RPM jumping is definitely a clutch issue.. Your clutch is slipping which indicates you need a new clutch soon.

Truthfully, I have no clue on your temp gauge issue.

Clutch is definitely gone. Sounds like your water pump is going bad. Did you replace it for your 60k service?

no I didn't. Thought that might be the issue. Hopefully the clutch is also the bad part...was hoping it wasn't turbo/transmission.

Clutch is definitely the issue.

And the water pump is probably causing the other issue. I wouldnt take it to the dealer. they will charge u too much. find a reputable shop

clutch is more then likely the rpm's shootin up issue. as for the overheating, id say either water pump or thermostat

On the overheating issue, id say check and make sure the level is ok. There is a tsb on coolant lines to the turbo that leak. You also may have a sticking thermostat. I wouldnt think that it could be the water pump. As long as it rotates its pushing coolant around. When they go bad they leak. So if its leaking replace it.

The water pump has never been replaced. No leaks that I can see and coolant level is at full. If the thermostat was stuck, would it not always read hot? It fluctuates with how hard the car is driven...in town, it barely goes over the norm, but on the interstate, it heats to hot within a minute and starts dropping very little and slowly if I go 70

Well...get her all fixed up. Got a new clutch, water pump, timing belt, and went ahead and replaced the noisy rear wheel bearings. Drives good as new at 118,000 miles.
