This is my first experience with used oil analysis. Please let me know what you guys think about this report.

A little extra info on my Evo: I have cams, exhaust, and run higher boost (24 psi) as part of the custom tune (dyno'd about 75 extra hp over stock) I had done using a SMART EXEDE. I have been using TORCO race fuel additive recently.

My main concern is the high lead in this first sample (33). My mileage on the oil is ~3400 and 6 months and I have ~37,000 miles on the car.

BLACKSTONE LABS COMMENTS:
Lead was well above average in the first sample from your Mitsubishi. This shows excess wear at the bearings. Fuel dilution was found at 1.3% but this isn't a problem level and normally wouldn't cause any excess wear. No other harmful contaminants were found. If you do any racing that may explain the high lead. The TBN is plenty strong at 6.6 so this oil has lots of life (active additive) left in it. 1.0 is low. Universal averages are based on an oil run of 3,500 miles. Suggest leaving this oil in use and check back in 2,000-3,000 miles for another look.

What do yall think about the oil guys comments about lugging around town and needing a heavier weight oil?

what brand and weight of oil?

 

The BITOG link says the oil is 5w30 M1. Why are you using 5w30? Does the Torco additive contain lead?

 

Mobil 1 5W-30 is what the manual recommends I believe... I believe Torco says their product does NOT contain lead, but I'll double check.

Has anyone run a 0W40 or 5W40 on their EVO? Comments, suggestions?

 

10w-30 is what the manual recommends, unless it's different on the VIII.

I use M1 10w30 but will be switching to M1 15w50 for my own personal reasons.

 

That 33ppm seems high for the lead content.

I was at 2ppm, then it went up to 6ppm on the 3rd analysis and on the 4th it "skyrocketed" to 15ppm in lead. THe last 2 were 14ppm and 13ppm, so it's been going down slightly.

 

Why are you not changing your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles? It's really cheap insurance for your engine.

The main reason to change the oil is to get rid of all the contaminates (fuel that is leaked passed the rings and so on) and also the byproduct of combustion.

 

try a better oil like a HDEO, Delvac 5w 40

 

The flash point on your oil appears to be low also... At least low in comparision to my past 5 analysises... Although that might be in direct relation to the percentage of fuel in your oil... I have yet to get anything but a <.5% for fuel %. I am averaging 411 degree flashpoint...

 

What could cause a high % fuel in the oil? Could these be related to extended use time?

 

Adam, here are the results from my latest oil analysis. For comparison, I have a VIII MR with 53.5k miles on the ticker and 6,500 miles on this oil sample (yes, sixty-five hundred miles on the oil). The lead in this sample spiked from a previous high of 2ppm in the previous sample (w/ 6k miles).

You didn't mention if you had a previous sample, but seeing Pb at 33ppm (as they point out) suggests to me that you have a bearing going bad. (If you have a previous sample, can you post up those results as well?) You really should get it checked out ASAP; if the bearing goes out while you're driving it'll be a very expensive repair.

 

The most obvious reason is the cliche "safe rich toon" that gets dealt out in lots of cases. I have seen oil inside turbos that is so full of fuel that you smell it as soon as you open up the turbo. Fuel diluted oil is bad, mkay?
