rear diff question

hey guys i got a problem. i have had my car for a while now and about last year this time i broke my TC from drag racing (launched too hard.. i won though ). it whinned for a long time. i drove it to mexico and back (over 1200 miles round trip) lol. and then i finally got a used on off the forums. well ever since then i have had this vibration (it only does it in 5th gear and it sounds like im in too low of a gear, like when your going 20mph in 5th)).

anyways i think its the rear diff. the noise started before i changed out this TC which makes me lead to believe it IS the diff.

i found a diff on the fourms with pretty low milage but its off an evo 9. i have an 03 evo 8. will it work??

been there unfortunately...
symptoms:
  1. lifted the car and free wheeled it in third gear to listen to clutch, t/c, and diff
  2. diff was LOUD and I was convinced it was going out because of the increasing whine, first noticed after (roadracing) track day-(never launched, first clutch lasted more than 50k mi)
Shipped trans, t/c and rear diff to Shep (car was down and i wanted his complete evaluation):
  • trans(needed new input shaft and normal synchros),
  • t/c(TOAST-said it was the worst he'd seen!!!), and
  • diff(not worth the shipping-he said its very, very rarely a problem, although he did reshim, reseal, and adj backlash from .11to.7) why it whined so much is a mystery(we stethescoped it like I said, so there must be a lot of noise in the rear diff all the time)
driving impressions:
  • diff-unoticeable, i guess its better off, like Shep said, it was Ok
  • t/c- much better- its new, it should be!!! went w/stage two -LCD and front wheels Really grab now!!
  • trans- a real let down, don't notice the new synchros, still notchy and rev dependant...sideline..i had a new fifth gear put in, removed the overdrive ratio and went w/a ratio that revs higher so i can now use 5th and not lose power/acceleration (i can cruise the Texas backroads in 5th and hit boost w/out being forced to downshift all the time-lost about 1.5m/gallon)
hindsight insights:

change t/c fluids with Dyaqueen Early and Often (its the best defense for the Evo's weak link- drive train)
go w/ the ACT heavy duty clutch w/GruppeS lightweight flywheel (my Carbonetics twin plate was expensive, loud and unreliable)

good luck w/yours...
