Exactly - using a standalone or at least ahvig fuel and timing controls is a far cry from just trying to tune it with SAFC or some fuel only corrective device. Given that method, again I will standby what I have said and what I know from personal experience - it won't idle well at all. 13-15 hg of vacuum is not bad, but not great either IMHO. But its all about how setady it is, not nonly the vacuum it pulls. To me, acceptable is a surge of arouns 150-200 rpm..that I can live with on a DSM with a fuel only controller (SAFC, SAFR, etc.). With standalone, it can be made to idle nearly dead on steady. When the car is very much out of tune, it will basically sound like TB shaft leak - up and down, up and down, in 500 + rpm increments DSm guys know what I mean!

I agree its all in the tuning, its down to what you are tunign with, and of course, who is doing it. On my "fast" car, my 280 ZX Turbo, I have a 610 lift cam with 305 duration, and my car idles steadily at 19 hg of vacuum and 950 rpm..but it took forever to get it there (and I have the benefit of using full standalone in the form of a TECII)

whoah, this is an OLD thread...but i wanna bring it back haha

i just ordered hks 272/272's for my evo 9 mr...and what i read so far is that it is pretty much neccesary to buy adjustable cam gears alont with the install or else the car is gunna be stalling frequently...right?

i want to run my evo on the track and daily driving, so can anyone tell me what degrees would be best? :3 hehe

thanks! and sorry for bringing this old thread up -___-"

I had hks 272's for mivec (i.e., for an IX like you) and there was absolutely zero lope to them and this was on stock cam gears, my idle was around 850rpm. There arent really any cam gears made for IX's anyway because of the mivec. The mivec cam gear isnt a regular cam gear.

The HKS 272's for an VIII sound totally different than the HKS 272's on a IX.

Yeah I had HKS 272s on my car and it had a slight lope but it had no problems with idling and I was also using stock cam gears.

Im running these 272s (int and exh side) on my evo 8 and i love them they make great power! Mine have a bit of lope but im running a hks hi power, megan test pipe, and hks downpipe and it sounds mean as hell! When i run A/C though it does kind of idle low and sometimes bogs down in 1st and reverse! But still i love these cams and wouldnt trade them for nothing!

yeaaa, i heard about that problem for mivex turbo engines....that there are certain cam gears that wont go with it. like the old version of the HKS cam gears :/

but does anyone run hks cam gears with a 9 or 8 MR??

and thanks! now i might feel more comfortable running on my stock cam gears for a while hahaha.

HKS now make new sets of cams.

Also, there is a Step 3 race cam that they do that is NOT available off the shelf.

I have seen this in a car, and made AWESOME topend and midrange. Flogged the **** outta a set of tomei 280* procams.

Where can one find information on these 'new' HKS cams for the 9 ? All HKS USA has listed is the standard 272s.

In the US, not sure. You may need to look for them in japan.

The new step 2 272's are more like a 274 now apparently.

There are much better options in the US market in comparison to the HKS cams. GSC & Kelford for one make lots power power than the HKS.

^ your missing what I'm saying.. GSC and kelford are better then the 'old' style HKS. But HKS Japan are now starting to sell a new cut, also there is a Step 3 'race' cam that is available, but only through the correct channels and ONLY from HKS Japan.

Not saying these new ones are better, as they are RARE and not many people have used/tested them. I have seen them make gains over Tomei 280* 11.5mm Procams.
