Oil Report(Blackstone)&K&N Air Filter

Received my report with the following negative:
"Silicon shot up to 52 ppm , and if this is from dirt getting past the air filter, it is making the oil abrasive. We suggest checking the air filtration system closely."

I am running an ETS kit( installed 2/08 brand new) with an RU-4260 K&N cone filter.
Oil was changed 12/07, just prior to air filter install.
I find it hard to believe the K&N is letting dirt through.

Anyone out there use Blackstone and had a similar report/problem?

My silicon content runs anywhere from 11ppm to 13ppm with an inexpensive paper filter. 50+ppm is way, way high.

It is very well documented that K&N filters allow significantly more particles to make it through the filter compared to a factory paper filter. Search on any of the diesel truck forums.

What do you expect though? The K&N makes more power by being less restrictive. Less restrictive means it's more porous and therefore not going to catch as much dirt.

IMO, if you don't plan on keeping the car for more than 200k miles, I wouldn't worry about it. Also, changing your oil often helps alleviate the issue.

No surprise here whatsoever. After my own experieinces and researching others' and some tests, I stopped using K&N and similar filters about 8 years ago.

Mr. Turco are you using the Blitz stainless or paper filter?

12/07 was the last time you changed your oil?

Jesus you havent changed your oil in 10 months? Umm ya that would be a problem. Its true oiled filters do let a bit more stuff through, thats why I still change my oil every couple thousand miles regardless of anyone saying they can go 10k per change. Come one, oil is cheap do you really want to stretch it out that long? Just asking for trouble if you ask me.

absolutely nothing wrong running the K&N. Just make sure you oil it enough. Not enough oil and it will not collect particles. I think All that talk of more flow = less filtration is really not all that true.

Read about the experiment that K&N did on their website to debunk the MAF oil issue. They basically soaked a filter with oil and purposefully got oil on a MAFS. It did absolutely no damage.
