Fluctuating boost?

I have a bone stock IX with a K&N drop in filter, everything else is stock for now. Recently my boost has been all over the place. I'm hitting 21 psi by 3500-3600 RPM it holds that boost till about 4000-4100 then it starts to jump all over. From 4000-6000 RPM it goes back and forth between 17- 20 psi before it starts to settle @ 19psi then tappers to 17psi by redline. It does this a lot in 2nd-4th gear during WOT runs. It only boosts normal in 5th, I hit 21 psi then it tappers off nice to 17 psi. I asked a local and he told me it's the cheap rubber connectors on the intercooler pipes, since they expand during boost thats why my boost fluctuates.......

Anyone else have these problems? Would upgrading the IC pipes net me more consistant boost through out the rev range?

Also when the boost does this I can feel a loss in power, it feels like it stops a little then goes back to pulling hard. Maybe it's time for some bolt-ons and a tune?

I would try a boost leak test and go from there.

When you say it fluctuates...how badly? A little wiggle on the guage or a serious up and down drop?

I agree do a boost leak test and see what you can find.

My neighbor is a master mechanic and owns a tranny shop so I'm going to have him do pressure test tonight after work.
