The MR's gear ratio's are closer. It shifts silky smooth, great feeling tranny. Just not worth swapping into a GSR for mileage / rpm concerns. Everyone thinks 6 speed cars have an extra gear on top.. really they have an extra gear in between, it's a common misconception.

As far as the 5 speed being better.. that depends on what your gonna use it for. For a daily driver 350whp car or stock car for that matter, I think the 6 speed is better and nicer. In hindsight with high HP configurations the 5 speed is stronger and doesnt suffer the 4th gear fatique issues, not to mention it's got a longer 4th gear which adds up to substantially better ET's at the drag strip (with higher hp). Mitsubishi doesnt build cars to be modified. They build them just how they are sold. Stock vs Stock the 6 speed cars are nicer and quicker (except RS that has weight savings).

If RPM is your concern you can change the final drive in the 5 speed. TRE and HKS make a taller final drive for the 5 speed.

Coming from driving a 6 speed converting over to a 5 speed in my MR. I would take the 5 speed over the 6. From what I have observed, there was no advantage in gas mileage and there was soo much shifting. 6 speed drives more like a STI. I like the way the 5 speed shift much better and coming from a DSM that broke sooo many transmissions. I'd rather have the security of a stronger trans.

how much would cost the conversion from 6 speed to 5 speed? what shop would u go? Shep or TRE? and how much time would it take approx? and does Shep do the same thing TRE does were they switch out some gears of the VIII for IX and vice versa on others? i personally don't spend much time in the highway but just want to build a reliable 450ishWHP and since tranny is our weak point, then start work there!

and suggestions?
thanks

6sp VS 5sp

Hey, fellas... I know this thread is a little stale, but I just thought I'd use some mathematics to shed a little light on the RPM difference between the two tranny's at freeway speeds...

Check it out for yourself by using the following Equation: (MPH*single gear ratio*Final Gear Ratio*336/Tire Diameter) to estimate RPM based on Gear Ratio and tire size. My Evo tires are aproximately 25.33" so I'm using that as a fixed variable for the comparisons.

Formula Example for 5th Gear of Evo VIII at 60MPH: 60*.72*4.529*336/25.33=2595 RPM's

Knowing the Gear Ratios for the VIII, IX, and IX MR, plug in the following numbers into the equation...

Evo VIII
Gear, Ratio, Final, Total Gearing
1st 2.93 4.529 12.613265
2nd 1.95 4.529 8.83155
3rd 1.41 4.529 6.539876
4th 1.03 4.529 4.963784
5th 0.72 4.529 3.446569

Evo IX
Gear, Ratio, Final, Total Gearing
1st 2.785 4.529 12.613265
2nd 1.95 4.529 8.83155
3rd 1.444 4.529 6.539876
4th 1.096 4.529 4.963784
5th 0.761 4.529 3.446569

Evo IX MR
Gear, Ratio, Final, Total Gearing
1st 2.909 4.529 13.174861
2nd 1.944 4.529 8.804376
3rd 1.434 4.529 6.494586
4th 1.1 4.529 4.9819
5th 0.868 4.529 3.931172
6th 0.693 4.529 3.138597

RESULTS:
At 60MPH
Evo VIII, 2595 RPM's
Evo IX, 2743 RPM's
Evo IX MR, 2497 RPM's

At 80MPH
Evo VIII, 3460 RPM's
Evo IX, 3657 RPM's
Evo IX MR, 3331 RPM's

At 90MPH
Evo VIII, 3893 RPM's
Evo IX, 4115 RPM's
Evo IX MR, 3747 RPM's

I got rid of my 5 speed fo a 6 speed in my time attack car and absolutely love it. The trans is tons better in terms of smooth driving, shifting, just a lot more fun, I also notice a difference on the highway.

I have personally done the swap. The clutch was the same and worked perfectly. The one thing that was annoying was mitsu has a tranny harness. Its 3 plugs, one for speed sensor, one for reverse lights, and one to connect back into the main harness. The harness is diff between the 5 and 6 speed, fair enough, but did they really have to make the 3rd plug where it connects back to the main harness different??? You can just cut both plugs and wire them together But I choose to find a 5 pin connector and sauter it on to each harness. not hard to do or very time consuming its just annoying they didn't make the engine harness the same. Also You will need to swap center councils so the 6 speed can get into reverse. Its really not much harder than doing a clutch to be honest with you.
