how much is to much shaft play

I just bought a new fp green and i noticed it has some minimal shaft play. Side to side has about 1 mm or less, while up and down has a really small amount of shaft play I cant even really tell. I can spin the wheel freely and it will not drag against the sides. What do you guys think tho.

1mm?? That's equiv to about 0.040"?? Perhaps 0.1mm??

Endplay, generally, should be limited to 0.0050" and axial play should be limited to 0.0030".

I just got this from fp site

"While this specification does vary from one brand to another and rule of thumb is less than .030" radial freeplay and less that .002" axial freeplay."

The shaft play definitely does not feel excessive but I was just wondering on your guys thoughts. I dunno how to accurately measure the shaft play

edit-

ok I actually got a ruler and a millimeter is a lot bigger than I thought lol. so yea i would say shaft play is about .1 or .2 millimeters of play.

You really can't measure shaft play with a ruler unless it's really shot (and would be dragging on the housings) lol. Some side to side shaft play is normal and necessary as these turbos are still sleeve journal bearing types, they rely on a thin film of pressurized oil to "float" the shaft in the same way that your crank and rods "float" on the crankshaft and main journal bearing surfaces.

Generally my shaft play measures about 1-2 times daily. The issues isn't so much of the play itself but of the messy clean-up afterwords. I recommend you set the scene properly afterwords with towels and hand sanitizer especially if you do this at work and need to shake peoples hands. Shaft play is quite natural and very healthy, keeps us level and keeps your shaft active.

Use a dial indicator to correctly measure the side to side measurement.
