New car... first problem.. :(

Hey all,

So, I'm assuming this is the best place to put this.. if not, let it be moved!

Anywho, I recently purchased an evo 8 from another member on this site. I drove it home last night and just since this morning I've been having this particular problem.

It would seem that when I try to do any 2nd/3rd/4th gear runs, the car's rpm's stop going up around 5k.

Now, the turbo spools up to max around 5k so I thought it was just traction problems.. but that wouldn't cause the rpms to freeze up would it?

I'm a bit confused and when I get home I'll try to put a datalog up and see if it shows why its stalling. I just wanted to put up this post in the meantime to see if anyone would have any ideas as to what it may be..

Thanks for the help!

it doesn't jolt like a fuel cut (well at least a fuel cut like my old supercharged RSX) .. I looked down when it was doing it and literally the rpms were just chilling at about 4900.. I was like "aaaand?" it doesn't sound like its particularly bouncing though either.. damn I know this isn't too helpful of a description of whats happening.. it just stops accelerating and halts at that rpm =\

the only time i have ever seen this is when my car did it in fifth gear when i had spark plug issues and my timing was off terribly other then that, that is really all i can think... get a new tune and see if it keeps doing it

I'll throw a datalog up here tonight.. I actually just had to replace a coilpack yesterday as it blew out.. could that mess with the tune?

the weird thing is, we replaced the coil pack, tested out a few pulls and it was AWESOME.. do you think the 5 hour drive home may have done it?

Maybe the member set a valet mode for you at 5k? That's be funny.

change the plugs, if the problem persists I would get a tune to be on the safe side.

Post a datalog and possibly an in car video showing us what exactly is happening...

Either way I would be lery of driving the car until the problem was worked out.

Yea, I'm not planning on driving it around too much...

*Here's the update*
On my lunchbreak I took it back out to drive it around.. it made it past that 5k mark so I've 86'd out the idea of the valet mode being stuck on or something.. but it did stutter a bit..

I'm honestly thinking since I brought it back from AZ the tune needs some finer tuning and is most likely running lean.. my AEM A/F gauge goes lower than 14 (I don't know what the norm is at WOT.. sorry still newb) .. whats the norm anyways? It's either that or a coil pack/plug blew.. I'll get a datalog up.. I'm also going to be pulling the coil packs and checking those..

You mentioned in the VegasEvos thread that it is using an AEM standalone. At least that is what I gather from your post. You might want to check the entire ignition system from plugs, to wires, and coils. If you are running on 91 gas, anything over 11.5 afr is what I would consider to be too lean.

Here's the pics.. I'm assuming its due to a bad coil pack.. I'm assuming one is bad since the other doesn't look the same..

BURNED UP!?

Fine?
