Blowin coil packs..
Blowin coil packs..
Like it's going out of style!
So, here's a quick story to catch everyone up..
I bought the car a few weeks ago. When I got home I was having some ignition breakup issues. It was a bad coil pack. Replaced it. All was good till yesterday when we had a cruise. I did a run against another evo and blew another coil pack.. weird.. replace it.
THEN I take it to my buddies to do a datalog to check out the mapping and I blow ANOTHER coil pack (thank god I had 4 back ups). It's the same coil pack so SOMETHINGS going on in there with those particular spark plugs getting way hot.
It didn't happen for about a week, so I'm assuming it's happening only when I'm doing WOT runs.
Has anyone heard this happening before? They are all BPR8ES spark plugs and the gapping is good..
I don't know where to start.. The solution I've been thinking of is just getting that coil pack kit that seperates the packs to 4 to work on each plug individually, instead of 2 plugs per pack..

How modified is your car? If its near stock I would say stick with the stock heat range plugs for one. Try both the BR7ES and the BPR7ES. The BR7ES has a non protruding tip and the BPR7ES has a protruding tip.
I am by no means an expert but why do you think a full cop will help out your situation? You will def get much better spark from it but im just not sure if its the coil thats the problem. Plus it would suck to drop about a g on a cop and burn out one of those coils. Just my .02

I figured the 350 dollar 4 coil pack set up from buschur racing would work better as it seperates it down to individuals instead of 2 per pack. I'm assuming it's just getting mad hot (for some reason) and mad burning up the coil packs.. I just don't know why. I had an HKS DLI hooked up as well but ended up unplugging that last night.. as I'm just trying to figure out what could be causing the SAME pack to blow over and over again.. The left pack seems to be holding up fine.. just the right pack blowing..
Ok I had no idea you had a 35r haha. Well in that case the 8 heatrange is what you want so you have that part correct. I dont know much about the different cop setups so I am not sure wehre you are finding ones for 350. The ones I have seen are from sparktech BR AMS etc and are all around a thousand. Could it be your plug wires? When is the last time you replaced them? They could be corroded causing too much resistance or chaffed and shorting itself out. I would just hate to see you spend more money on new coils and blow those out. There just has to be some sort of underlying problem causing the coils to go bad.

You're right.. I was under the "1st gen dsm" area not the evo area.. sheit. Yea, don't wanna blow a grand if I don't have to.
SO... fantastic. Maybe spark plug wires..? Hmm..
Yea.. I was figuring maybe plug wires.. here's the product I found that I'm talking about..

hmmm ya so I was right about the cop being real expensive...not that you wouldnt benefit from it but its obv not in your price range at the moment. If you havent checked your wires then I would strongly advise to do so. Even if they look fine they still could be crap. Im not sure if this holds true for the evo world but from what I have heard a lot of aftermarket wires actually suck and that you are better off replacing them with OEM. You mentioned that you have a local buddy with an evo. Maybe he would let you try out his wires and see if that does the trick?

Im not familiar with the HKS DLI but its always a good idea to eliminate all the variables that you can. Make a little checklist with possible sources of error. Personally the wires would be the first things I replace because IMO thats most likely your issue. You just need to start going at it and attack the easiest and cheapest things first. Good luck
