noise after clutch and flywheel install
Hey guys,
well it seems like my car is noise happy lately. this time after replacing the clutch and flywheel with ACT's heavy duty street disc kit and street lite flywheel and i also installed a Buschur front motor mount. the install was done by my friend and i which was a learning experience on its own lol. it took us about 18hrs to do which was spread out in 3 days. upon completion we started the car and there was a loud "whinning noise". its hard to explain. it went away as soon as the car warmed up and if its off but still warm upon startup it wont do it. only does it when the engine is completely cold. the noise fluctuates with engine speed. it also changes when the clutch pedal is depressed. i also feel vibration in the clutch pedal once i start to depress it until it starts to move the clutch. i can have my foot on the pedal and wont feel the vibe until i start to push down on it. once completey down the vibe seems to be gone. i plan on taking a video in the morning to see if it does it. everything was installed following the Evo Moto and Mitsu Joe install procedures. the flywheel was torque to spec. anyone ever experience this. its hard to say if it was the clutch /flywheel install that did this but this and the motor mount is the only differences. i once had a timing belt noise thing going on to until i drove the car to the dealership and the noise went away. i might have to do the same thing again lol
if you had seen/heard of this please let me know.

is the whine upon startup when the engine is cold? it goes away when it warms up. i just adjusted the clutch pedal to raise it a bit it seemed to low for me. it grabs hard and seems to run fine but that whinning noise when starting is wierd. let see what it does tomorrow. one thing i did notice as well was when down shifting i can feel the car and the clutch pedal have some vibration as well. but when i adjusted the pedal and ran it it through it seemed to be a bit better. we'll see maybe a breakin thing

well hopefully the whine will work its way out. it's pretty loud. i heard it inside my house and the car was outside warming up. hopefully it has to do with the break in time.

This is normal. Mine did the exact same thing. That being said, when I first did the install the noise you are refering to was horrid. After a week or so the noise disappeared for the most part. I still have some minor noise but nothing like at first.
Also, the vibration in the clutch pedal becomes almost non-existant after a short while.
ACT makes a great product, just a little noisey and stuff. Drives like stock - will buy from them again

Check the clearence between the lower shield and the flywheel. It's just behind the starter and covers the low part of the block. I was getting a pretty good noise after my clutch install too and came to find it was that lower shield rubbing the flywheel. As soon as the block would heat up and expand it would deminish. I took the shield off and took a little off with the Dremel. Voila, no noise

Get ready to say goodbuy your first main bearing, and little bit later to your crankshaft. And before you can rebild your gearbox..
I spent lots of time searching for the reason - but it is very simpe - ACT cluth. Just keep it away from your car!
