Exhaust Rant/ Need help finding a shop in Salt Lake City

Hello there friendly forum members,

Wow, where to begin. So I have been smelling that funky egg smell when you know your CAT is being cooked. So I need to finish the full exhaust out to 3", (I'm still on my stock CAT and Stock piping between the CAT and Muffler)...

So went to get priced for the piping and the labor to weld in the new Perrin CAT, and complete the exhaust for me, so I can tune it. I also found an exhaust leak which is causing some issues I think as well.

Either way, Guy at Master Muffler quotes me rediculous prices just for piping. $100 for a length of 3" x 7ft. $50 per manderal bend for the elbos, and I need (2) 90 degrees elbows, and then (2) 45 degrees. Wants $200 just for those...

Then he tries to tell me that crush bends won't hurt anything....BFS...
Then he quotes me $350 for the standard Highflow, non Highflow CAT... dealer replacemnt, and claims it is a high flow, and etc....

$600 for a couple of welds and piping, and a CAT...? WTF over?

Any one else with similiar quotes. Am I lowballing the guy. I can price all the parts on line, except the staight section of pipe...for $326 includes Perrin CAT and 4 elbows. Stragith section of 3" no SS, shouldn't be that much...Shouldn't take him an hour to put it all together and weld it up. 2 hours total for labor.

Someone tell me $500 is avg., but $450 should be good... am I crazy?

Thanks in advance...

You're in the wrong section... but you can probably pick up some mild steel 3in straight section or and elbows for cheap off ebay and pay for labor cost. It all depends on how busy or desperate they want your business, plus Master muffler is pricey for labor in general... I wouldn't spend more than $200 or $300 max on labor, as I have done this one a few of my older cars before. You think its just cut and weld but it'll probably take them at least 2 to 3 hours to do the job right...

BTW those mandrel bents, I've bought like 10+ bends from a ebay vendor once and only cost $150 shipped. Just to give you an idea.

So you already have a 3" downpipe and an aftermarket muffler? Then all you need is a hiflow cat or test pipe (~$150) and a few feet of straight pipe ...The total should be less than $300...That said, you could pick up a used Buschur TBE for about the same price....

So basically you need a HFC/test pipe AND a catback exhaust? I think you would be better off purchasing an inexpensive 3" catback (deals on used ones or even Ebay ones if you need to save money), and buying either a test pipe or high flow cat (bought my test pipe new off lancershop.com for like $80). If you do a test pipe you would have to swap your stock cat back onto the car to pas emissions (which is required in Salt Lake City, thats where I live).... I dont recommend any welding of exhaust components together tho...It would be good to have a separated downpipe, cat/test/pipe, and catback for the reason being that cats are required and if you have one welded in you would need to replace your entire setup when your cat craps out down the road. I can see bolting in a 3" HFC/testpipe and having a shop fabricate a 3" cat-back for you... If you want to go that route rather than purchase a catback maybe check Meineke (spelling?) I had them fabricate me a catback exhaust with mandrel bends for my 4Runner and it was less than $200. Any of those exhaust shops should have 3" gaskets to prevent exhaust leaks for pretty cheap as well.

There are tons of no-name brands for sale for less than $100 like this for $79:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Catba...1%7C240%3A1318

Pick one with the most straight-thru/less bendy design, really its just a hollow metal pipe. Some exhaust shops offer lifetime warranties if you find somebody to fab a mandrel bent one, like I mentioned before check meineke

I need the CAT and then the tubing and manderal bends. I purchased the axle back portion or muffler, and left my tubing stock @2.5 inch, until I get it upgraded...
I will check Mieneke. I want the Cat to bolt to the Down pipe, but thought it didnt matter for the other side, heading back to the muffler...

Thanks again for your help.
