Clutch Shutter / Chatter
Clutch Shutter / Chatter
All,
I have a 2003 Evo VIII with about 38k miles on it. I bought the last car and it had a new clutch in it. It shuttered and shook the whole car at times when the clutch was engaged. It was an aftermarket clutch (4 puck). I dealt with it rather than investigate, and within the year it was slipping so bad I could barely get it into the garage.
I ordered a new clutch and flywheel and had them installed. The clutch still does the same thing. I just finished my 500 miles of break in time and it acts no differently than the clutch I had before.
Because both clutches acted the same, it makes me feel that it is something beyond the clutch, but I don't proclaim to be an expert mechanic. I have done extensive searches and found a couple leads, but would like to tap the knowledge base here. Below are some key points...
- When the clutch engages (this one is a 6 puck), it feels like it 'shocks' the drivetrain. It studders and shakes as I take off in 1st gear. Shifting through the rest of the gears is relatively smooth. Higher RPMs does make the effect less.
- In reverse it is terrible! My old clutch wasn't this bad in reverse. As I engage the clutch, it feels like it engages, then doesn't, engages, then doesn't. Its very bad. Higher RPMs does make the effect less.
- When I downshift and re-engage the clutch, it shocks the drivetrain (makes the car shutter and shake) at the engagement point. Once engaged, nothing seems out of the ordinary.
FYI, I have been driving manual transmissions for about 25 years now. I had an STi for two years (with no problems) and this Evo for the past year.
I read something about bushings (motor mounts or transmission mounts) that could be a weak point. Any thoughts or experience?
Thank you in advance for your help.
