ATTN people with 5th gear grind...
Friday...
I took my car to the local Mitsu dealer to let them hear my 5th gear grind. I had a service tech do a ride along. After the ride along we went back to the dealer and he said he needed to contact the Mitsu Tech line. After about 15-20 minutes of waiting the service manager comes to me and tells me that this is a common problem/issue with the tranny. He told me that they were going to contact the Mitsu Tech Line again to see what parts that needed to be replaced so they could order them and was told I would recieve a call when they came in. I left the dealer under the impression that my car was gonna be fixed.
Monday...
My cell phone rings and its the service manager from the Mitsu dealer. I figure he was calling to inform me that my parts were in and to set up a time and day to have the car dropped off. WRONG! Once on the phone, he tells me that he talked to the district service manager and he had talked to the Tech Line and came to the conclusion that there was no need to fix the tranny due to no updated parts being available to fix it.
Now what he is telling me would be easier to swallow if they tried to adjust my clutch, put some different fluid in it, or even put a new 5th geat and synchro in the car. For him to tell me this and not even try to fix it really is starting to get under my skin. He tells me that my issue is documented, but what good does that do?
I have some quesitons...
Am I suppose to drive my car with a grinding tranny til the damage gets so bad that it stops goin in gear altogether?
If you have this same issue, did the dealer try to at least fix it?
If it was fixed, what did they do to fix it?
If they didn't fix it what was thier reason to not to?
My car was bought brand new in Jan. 07' and I bought it used from a private seller in July 07' with 4000 miles on it. The car just hit 20,000 miles last week. It just had all the fluids changed at around 18,000 miles and is still on the stock clutch. I got on Evom after the phone call and searched and was blown away at how many people are having this issue and just pass it off as its just a normality. I don't see how it is. I don't care if a car has 5 miles or 150,000 miles, if the tranny is grinding, there is something wrong.
The district service manager is coming in on Wed. and the service manager is gonna talk with him some more about my car. Hopefully something will come out of it. If not, I'm willing to go over his head and already contacted my lawyer on the matter.
If you guys don't mind, please answer my questions and give me some info on your situation and how it turned out for you. I already mentioned to the service manager the countless threads about grinding gears and would be willing to show him.
Thanks and sorry for the long post and another grinding gear thread.

Do you have any modifications on the car?
If you do they will some how blame it on the mods. They'll even go as far as blaming the tires you are running other than OEM or even window tints lol.
or
If you are stock then they'll just say it's from abuse.
But good luck.

I have a Apexi cone filter, Cobb dp, and a Apexi GT Spec cat back on my car. The service manager has no problem with what I've done to the car and agrees my car should be fixed, but its not his decision.
Im 33 years old and this is my 2nd Evo and have had both of them serviced there. They know me very well and know I don't abuse my cars. They can say what they want about abuse, but there is proof all over this forum showing that its a issue. Mitsu's tech line even said its a common problem.

TTT with this one. Corey I knew they would give you a hassle... Pretty sad when you pay so much for a car with a warrenty and they try to give u the run around on it.... Its all because its a performance car. They might as well not even sell a warrenty with the cars if its going to be such a hassle to get anything done.
Then you have the kids they hire at these dealers... Do you really want them working on ur trans?? I know i wouldnt! The previous owner of my car had the oil pan redone 3 times at the same dealership you took your car to... Well when we pulled the pan off a couple months ago my oil pickup was about 75% blocked with silicon. They obviously hire IDIOTS there!!

Yeah, I know. I would rather them put a new tranny it to be honest just to eliminate a tech messing up.
UPDATE (like anyone cares) but I will post it anyways.
I took it upon myself (since I wasn't getting any responses here) and just called random dealerships that were out of state to see if they were aware of the 5th gear issue and I also asked what they did to fix it. Everyone told me that it was the synchro and they either replaced it or rebuilt the tranny altogether. I asked on service writer how common this issue actually is and his exact words were "dude, I've been here for a little more than 2 months and we've fixed at least 15 Evo's with your issue."
Not one single dealership I talked to said there wasn't a fix or updated parts for our tranny like my dealership is telling me. I will be waiting patiently for my call tomorrow to find what is gonna happen. From there I'll either be making an appointment to have it fixed or I will be calling Mitsu corp. to file a coplaint and will also be contacting my lawyer.

I keep hearing you refer to this particular dealership as "my" dealership.
The first thing i would do is take it to another dealership. Some have better reputations than others, better service departments etc.
If all else fails contact mitsu corporate and deal with an agent directly.

The shortage of Good techs is industry wide
there's a shortage of qualified techs, trans work is near the top of the skill level
Mitsu is sort of an off brand, most of the top techs are with the big main lines.
the reason your dealer doesn't want to do it is probably cuz the techs aren't capable
call around till you find someone that is
replacing the trans is not called for and nearly as much chance of problems
Put the best fluid you can find and change it every 10K mi after this, try to avoid the problem in the first place

I'm not one to be taken advantage of. I'm not some young kid that goes out and beats the ever living **** out of my car everyday. I have put 8,000 miles a year on this car since I've owned it and it still has the stock clutch.
My 03' didn't have a single warranty issue. I bought the car new and sold it 3 years later with 63,000 (I think) and it drove perfect. Out of two Evo's owned, one FINALLY needs warranty work and they are trying to find a way out of it. Its not gonna be that easy with me. Maybe for you or someone else, but not me when I know for a fact I didn't do anything to cause it.
You have a car with 400hp, with a good amount of mileage on it, with no probelms. Congrats man. I have a car that doesn't make 280whp, 34,000 less miles, and I don't NLTS my car.....ever. Your lucky just like I was with my 03'.
