When I bought my car (03 evo last year) if you turned the wheel when the car was idling it made a horrible grinding noise. Replaced the pump and all was well... when we took the pump apart found all this "crap" in there like metal shavings, apparently it was destroying itself. Ordered a "new" one on car-part.com

I've checked the fluid, it's fine, and I just replaced my timing and serp belts. Like I mentioned above the squeeling noise is coming from the bearing area, I've applied oil and it does go away. Just washed my engine bay last night and the sound returned again, so I applied more lithium greese and wd40 and it's since gone away. Just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem. Sound like I need to replace it or have it rebuilt.

4g63K, let me know what you end up doing.

Here's a pic of where I've added some oil and greese,

I'm also having this very annoying whining noise. It started about 20K ago but the dealer couldn't hear it. This past winter it started to get very noticeable to the point where everyone that gets in or near my car asks me what's wrong with it. I now have 75K mile on my Evo ('05 MR). Thanks for the ideas. I may end up replacing the pump but will try the grease first to confirm the source of the issue. I've been avoiding the dealer but may finally go.

Also, anyone getting a brief sensation of the car bogging down for no reason? It feels the same as letting of the clutch when the transmission goes back under load, but more brief. This actually seems to only happen when I have the AC on. The car gets really jerky with the AC on and I've been thinking the whining noice was related to the AC pump but that failed a year ago so it is relatively new.

Yeah I just noticed for the first time that my evo is also bogging down. I just sprayed it with some wd40 again and it just bogged down on me. Feels like it's running on two cylinders or something. I'll probably replace the pump here soon cause this is turning into a pain in my butt

Well after using WD-40 and Lithium Greese to solve this issue, it just kept coming back. Opted to just apply some general motor greese to the main bearing and the sound has subsided. Planning on replacing the pump here sometime down the line, but the noise is completely gone

You might want to check that the pulley for the PS pump is angled the same as the rest of the pulleys - that will cause premature failure if it's misaligned. The misalignment would be cause by the mounting holes getting worn. Just a thought.

Yeah I'm also just planning on replacing the pump. Used some standard greese on it the other day and the noise has not returned.
