vibration after installing cams
vibration after installing cams
i have a nasty vibration, whine, and howling all put together after installing cams.
i ve searched and i think i have the oil pump 180 backwards.. (timing belt tensioner tool broke during the cam install and had to do the whole belt). now the question is how do i fix it? do i basically redo the whole process of getting the drive belt off and get to the timing belt and spin the oil pump 180degrees? does anyone have pics or instructions on how to fix it? or would i be better of just paying a shop to do it?

The whine is probably due to the belt being tensioned improperly and the vibration due to a balance shaft being out of phase.
Redoing the timing belt is not all that hard provided you have proper tools, are a decent mechanic and follow the correct procedure – meaning get the Service Manual in some form.

hey david, i can check it out for you. if it is the front balance shaft out of phase, the car will idle semi-normal, but as soon as you rev it, it will sound like it is vibrating apart. to fix it you need to take the timing belt off and turn the oil pump pulley 360*. i can do it for you, but not till after saturday.
which brings me to inviting you to our grand opening/open house this saturday at the shop (if you haven't already seen the invite in the NTEC section here). you've already been there once, but we are having free lunch, sno cones, and a raffle for some cams, labor and other misc parts. its from 10-4, lunch from 12-2. come on out!!

wow this thread really helped. I have the same symptoms except my vibration/whine /howl starts when i get into the 4.5k to 6k range either driving or revving from a stop. Also, i will pull it to redline then let off and i would get this howl/vibrating as the rpm's decline. PLEASE HELP. what should i do. I have access to many reputable shops.

Also while you're there ensure your other balance shaft is aligned with the balancer belt.
Here's the run down in the manual:
>>F<< VALVE TIMING BELT INSTALLATION
1. Align the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft
camshaft drive sprocket and engine oil pump sprocket.
2. After aligning the timing marks of the engine oil pump
sprocket, remove the cylinder block plug and insert a Phillips
screw driver with a shaft diameter of 8 mm (0.31 inch)
through the plug hole to check that the shaft of the screw
driver can be inserted for 60 mm (2.36 inches) or more. If
the screw driver makes contact with the balancer shaft and
can be inserted for only 20 − 25 mm (0.79 − 0.98 inch), turn
the engine oil pump sprocket for one round and align timing
marks again to check that screw driver can be inserted for
60 mm or more. Do not take the screw driver out before
completing installation of the valve timing belt.
3. Install the valve timing belt as follows:

bump same question..i've had this problem for ~2k miles and havent thought about it until i saw this thread. I even got dyno tuned with it. (i put down 340whp,365tq on a dynojet cammed evo 8 23psi 93oct) Will it affect my hp and performance. I was honestly expecting 350. My shop also said he doesn't hear anything abnormal when i free rev it to where it vibrates. I dont know, maybe im going crazy. I'll take a video of it later today..And see what people think.

I'm curious as to who made your timing belt tool that broke. I had my AMS tool break on me. Im still not a happy camper about it.
mpevo8 - did you have to do the timing belt when you did your cams? if not i dont think this is the same problem as what your experiencing
i made my own belt tensioner.. rod wasnt strong enough and it snaped.
