Fuel Guage ??

Driving home today my fuel guage slowley started to fall towards Empty. Eventually i got the Empty/fuel low light, and it went below. Is there a fuse that could cause this, or is it just the sender inside the fuel tank gone bad?? the car was half way between 1/2 and .25 tank with 3.7 gal. of gas left. Filled up and still read Empty.

There is a float on the fuel sending unit. It has a connection that varries voltage to indicate fuel level. Yours is broken.

so where do you buy the fuel sending unit?? I have a friend that his gauge works fine until it hits a 1/8 of a tank and then doesn't go any lower after that ??? He has no clue what the problem could be.
