Kelford IX Cams,Good or Not

when the Kelfords became popular in the states there was sooo much hype, due to the AMS cam test im guessing....But Latley ive been reading alot of reputable people saying they had little to no gains using the Kelford IX cams...

i just wanted to get some opinions and maybe some dyno plots vs stock IX cams

Kelfords will yield slightly higher peak gains over the comparable Cosworth cams.

I give them a good rating

I run the Kelford 272s in my 9 mr.

They definately opened up the top end of my powerband without having any effect on spool.

It was a huge difference in driveability being able to rev the motor without it falling flat on its face after 5800.

They idle flat at 950-1k rpm and pull 12-13 lbs of vacuum.

I was thinking about getting these but in the end decided on the FP4R's. Can't say much about the Kelfords but I'm very pleased with the FP4R's.

+1 same here

As for the OP:

When something is tested well.. of course there is going to be hype.. every one will not be in the same conditions as the car that was tested (AMS fully built car on that test).. You really can't go wrong with any of the cams available for the evo today.. I would mostly stay away from the Brian Crower cams since I usually never see good results on those.. but most are good.. including kelford 272s, gsc s2s, fp4rs, cosworth m2's, jun272s, etc.. you really can't go wrong man.. No matter what cams are chosen.. you will see good gains with the right tune over STOCK cams.. good luck

I'm also struggling on deciding what cams to get I originally wanted the fp4r's but was swayed to the kelfords with the test that I read

I stayed away from the Kelfords because everybody was nutswinging on them. Hey, they performed well but it's not the only cam out there. Besides these were VIII Kelfords that they tested anyway. I can't say what gains my FP4Rs had on my setup because I did my FP Red at the same time along with a ported stock exhaust mani. The idle is freak'n awesome though. Everytime I show up to one of the car meets I have everyone staring at my Evo because of the idle as I'm pulling into a parking space. I always get "That's the nastiest sounding Evo I've ever heard".

I actually upgraded from the Brian Crower 272's & it was a night and day diffrence. I hated those cams & I love the FP4R's.

Yep, exactly.. Those BC's are not good in my opinion.. Never seen any good results with them.. I hope I love my 4R's.. I could have had any cam and chose these so I hope I am going to be happy hehe

my friend has them in his IX and it pulls real hard even with the stock turbo....i just couldn't live with that sound as a dd....yeah its cool for a while, but i think would be aggrevating on a daily basis...even the s2's u can pretty much make them sound stockish....just my opinion

Trust me, you'll never look back!! They're the largest cams that you can fit with the stock valve train. You can't even try the fp5rs without modifying some things on the head.

^ Tru. They are pretty big. I compared them (visually) to the Cosworth M2's & they were quite a bit bigger. I was running my 4R's on the stock turbo & they were still great. It seems I may have turned this into an FP4R thread. sorry.

We've seen better response and gains when we switched from GSC S2's onto Kelford 272's, in an Evo IX.

Cwill's car(Evo 8) makes 732whp on a mild set-up 6262 with Kelford 272's.

Bottom line, we recommend the Kelford cams to everyone, whether they have an Evo VIII or IX.
