Unhappy My car keeps stalling, WHY??

I dont know what the deal is with my car... but it stalls every time I get the revs up and let off the throttle completely. It seems that the idle drops very low and cuts out, but sometimes revives itself, then idles fine.

First, I went to RMR and got a RMR down-pipe, RMR Intake, RMR Cat Back, and Forced air induction scoop. The car ran great after that, even though still breaking it in at 150 miles.

Now with 230 miles, still very light on the throttle, I just had the following mods done: Super AFC II (not tuned), HKS Turbo Timer Type 1, and EVC-5 (turned off-to help the situation) and the HKS SSQV, which is setup with the recirc valve, and flutters alot!

The problems started after these latest round of mods. I do not know how to set the S-AFC II (Atleast to what numbers should I set it so young?), and brainstorm said that I should wait till I hit 1000 miles before I take it in. Problem is, it keeps stalling, what should I do

Please HELP!

Thanks,

Your problem is the HKS SSQV. Search around. There is no cure. Unless you running HKS Super AFC, the EIDS function will help to prevent your car from stalling.

Another way to prevent stalling is while you let off the throttle, try downshift at the same time. This will prevent stalling. I'm kind of getting into this habit of downshifting.

Or you can eliminate the problem totally by replacing the HKS SSQV back to the stock BOV.

It's that HKS BOV. I only know a couple people that have that thing working properly. It always sounds like crap regardless, too. I have most of the same mods (plus a couple more) you have and I still run the stock BOV. I only get that stalling when I half-throttle and then let off. Don't lug the motor and you'll be fine.

I have the SSQV and I don't have those problems. You just need to know how to drive with it. You can't just let off the gas after u get your revs up.

Update: The symptom appears even when I roll up to a stop light, or slow down in traffic too.

Should I be running this vta instead, or will the problem still be around?

Thanks,

So are you saying that I can fix the idle through EIDS in my s-afc?

Thanks,

Put your stock airbox back on - I bet the problem goes away.

i've been running the SSQV VTA for over 4 months now... like Bill said, you have to learn how to drive with it... you cannot hit the throttle hard, neutral and let off the gas 100%...

when slowing down to a stop, leave it in gear and when the rpm's reach one, then take it out of gear

or

if you HAVE to take it out of gear, give it a lil gas when it's bout to drop...

either those two, or just swap the BOV... when i'm approaching a stop, I leave it in gear, it's easy.... try it

I will try that. I developed by driving habits in a 400 whp WRX, and never seem to have problems with my driving style b-4.

Thanks for the heads up!

rubelcon,

it's definately your Super AFC setup. One of my friends from SQC who has the Super AFC II also ran into the same idle problem right after he installed the unit but left it untuned. The symptoms you described cannot be due to the HKS SSQV, moreover you have it recirculated. It sounds to me like the same kind of rough idle as a leak in the intercooler piping. Try getting your Super AFC tuned, if it's still having rough idle, check your piping.

I say put the stock divertor valve back in 1st. Then worry about the afc. The afc sould not have any affect if everything is zeroed out and you have not been playing with it, unless you never told it what type of car it was for the initial setup, even then I don't think it would be modifying any signals so...

As long as the SAFC is zeroed out ***and most importantly, set to sensor type Karman***, there is no way it will cause your car to die like that. I've heard things like this about the SSQV/VTA before on here, so I bet that's the problem if you're SAFC is set to Karman and installed correctly.

On another note, I'd NEVER take an SSQV if it made my car die if I didn't "adapt" my driving style to keep in running. SCREW THAT! That's crappy engineering, period.
