MitsuJDM: is your whine coming from the front like BluEVOIX's is? Mine had the usual noises in first and sometimes second from the front, but went away at higher speeds. After fluid changes in drivetrain, my rear diff started whining (noise coming from back center, of course), and was loudest at 55mph and higher. It would only make noise on throttle (stop when off-throttle) and got really loud under heavy accelleration. Took it to a shop for confirmation, but just something to look out for.

My whine on the highway is extremly faint. You have to try and hear it. But it sounds like it's coming from the front. I'm not even sure if I should be worried. I'll worry more when it sounds like I'm be followed by a firetruck.

If you got your fluids changed and it started, changes are it was the wrong fluid. I've read about that happened more than few times.

The sound my car makes is not normal. I know what the normal drivetrain noise sounds like.

The normal drivetrain sound is similar to what the 1st gear does. But in my case its like the sound is vibrating. Thats why I say its oscilating. And also the sound only arrives during decel in gear or keeping speed. It does not make the sound when accelerating. Also its most audible in 5th gear around 50-65 area.

I'm suspecting its either the throwout bearing, something to do with final drive or shaft bearings in transmission.

i have the same exact noise. i made a post about it a few weeks ago and got all the same responses.

i just checked today for shaft play and there was none at all. so its either normal whine maybe bc the boost is turned up. or i thought maybe something with the TOB bc mine is rattling and im just waiting for the day i have to put a new clutch in.

here is the link to my post if u wanna look through it... https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...8-whining.html

You know, if you haven't checked or changed your rear diff fluid, noise can tranfer up the driveshaft, making the sound seem like like it coming from the front. Unlikely, but possible.

Wrong fluid was the first thing I wondered about too. I spoke to the mechanic personally and he said Diaqueen directly from the dealer, and specific instructions for service. They are reputable and competent, so I trust them. I probably shouldn't be shocked because I'm the third owner of a modded Evo...

Just wanted to eliminate another possibility for you.

I have a 03 like you OP, and my car whines and whines, but its normal. Unless the whine starts to get real loud, your tc might be in trouble. All you can do is get use to it.

Well then that's just an unfortunate coincedence.

Ok first of all, I bought my car brand new with only 7 miles on it. And 4 of those miles were put on by me during the test drive.

I know what normal drivetrain sounds like. This noise only started after I launched my car with 4 people inside. Estimated extra body weight of 700+ lbs . Its not normal because I have 27,600 miles on the car now and this sound started 400 miles ago. Its not as faint as the stock drivetrain noise, but not as lound as those whining blown transfercases.

The blown transfer case sound from all the documented clips, sounds like a siren going off. This one is more like the first gear sound, but pulsing fast and a little more pronounced. It is most pronounced when giving just enough throttle to keep the speed. It pretty much goes away when I give more throttle to accelerate and is still there if I engine brake.

I'm going to change the rear diff fluid probably tomorrow just to rule that out.

Either way I really need to change the throwout bearing soon. In the process I ordered an Evo 8 trans from Shep with 9 1st gear and Street-Strip build.

Got this from the other whine thread.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zz9J...eature=related

This is what my car sounds like. Its probably not as loud as that clip to have caught it on the audio, but its annoyingly less audible. At least since I know it,

So it is the transfer case?

I'm confused if its the transfer case why the hell does it not make that noise full time? I thought t-case noises would always be audible when the car is rolling?

Ok just sort of located the direction of the noise.

For some reason I keep hearing it coming from the front But I had 2 friends sit in my car today and both confirmed that its coming from the back possible driver side.

But with all the combined passanger+driver weight of 550 lbs, the sound seemed to be less audible than before.

I'm going to change the rear diff fluid and see if it changes anything.

Update. Rear diff oil changed, no change...

So yesterday we put the car on jack stands and tested it to 35 , 45 adn 55 mph. My friend didnt bring his mechanics stethoscope, but we used a screw driver as a mediam to transfer/hear sound. Well we found that the noise is coming from the transmission.

I still dont know what it is, maybe its the throwout bearing that came with the CCI clutch. I'm waiting for Shep to send me the built transmission so I can change the TOB and swap the trans.

The sound is pretty much exactly like the one found in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zz9J...eature=related . So I tried to contact the person that hosted the clip if they found out what it was. I'll update further when I get more info...

I launched the car last week with a little wheel hop and nothing happened then and for no reason it just started to sound like this last night. I only hear it in 5th gear (no other gears) just cruising or during decel.

Has anyone really confirmed if this is caused due a bad TC or just normal.

For what ever reason, right now its less audible. Maybe because of the cold?

I'm suspecting its the throwout bearing. Shep trans has arrived and and next weekend we'll be installing it. I'll update this thread with more info.

Alright.

Changed the transmission and changed the clutch / throw out bearing and the noise seems to be gone.

I'm not sure what was the cause the Transmission or throwout bearing. But the TOB was spinning very freely and made slight noise with just the hand speed spinning action.

I'm in the process of sending my transmission to shep for core refund. I'll let you know if any thing from the trans went out that might have caused the noise other wise the blame goes to the aftermarket throw out bearing.
