With 6 gears inside the transmission the space is just restricted, so they are not as strong as the 5 speed gears. I get on my car pretty hard though, and it is modded a good bit and it still shifts as good as the day i bought it (470/410). You just have to baby it a bit more than the 5, more frequent changes and not to do too crazy downshifts, i.e. 6 to 4 at full speed on the highway to 8500 rpms or something crazy aggressive. The oil you have to use in it is a little bit more expensive too, the SDQ 75W85 I believe...

If you plan to build the car for power and plan on hard launches, get the 5 speed.

If you want less than 400 hp, and you track the car, consider a 6 speed.

if your going to get rough then get the 5 speed but sounds like the kind of driving you like you might want to invest in a built tranny then to be honest

Definitely 5-speed if your going to be beating on it pretty good, also recommend a John Shepherd upgrade if you want it to hold up under a lot of abuse.

6 speeds do handle very well on the track, but those hp limitations you said are not accurate at all. I have seen cars running up to 600 around that have the 6. Granted they don't launch the **** out of the car, but they are holding strong. I like the gear ratios of the 6 better than the 5. If the 6 had the durability of the 5 it would be far superior I think, especially on autocross. It might be a pain to throw through all those gears in drag though...

6 speed is plenty strong, the 5 speeds are stronger though. Gears 1,2, and 3 are thicker/stronger in the 6 speed but 4th and 5th are not as thick. If you plan on road racing the 6 speed can heat up too much and usually 4th gear is where the teeth shear off of the gear. 5 speed has better gearing for 1/4 mile and can be re-built. 5 speeds can be installed in an MR if you blow your tranny up, costs about $450 for conversion parts + the 5 speed tranny. 6 Speed is smoother and better for daily driving, quieter on highway due to the 6th gear. Hard to know if its your driving that killed your Audi trannies or the unreliability of Audi in general (I've owned 4 of them, always things breaking, always expensive). It costs less to rebuild a 5 speed than to buy one and do the swap on an MR, so if you are worried about breaking things keep that in mind. I'm running about 470 crank hp through my MR 6 speed right now, but I have never blown up a tranny in any car I have driven either.

I came from an S4 to the Evo. I got the MR. I had to rebuild my 6sp. Go with the 5. If you beat the car why even bother with the aggravation. Its not an easy install to take out the 6spd. The SE is a nice car.. Do it and don't look back.

and how did you blow up the tranny twice on the audi. they are pretty solid transmissions.. I beat my S4 and My R32 both solid. (knock on wood) never had a transmission issue..

I had to think about this when I bought my '06 SE, I am happy with my decision. Besides the floor mats, e-brake handle, vortex generator, and tranny, the SE is pretty much an MR.

I have the 6speed and had the 5 speed, I prefer the 6 speed in every way.
