Bearing clearances (again)
Bearing clearances (again)
I've been doing a little research recently because I broke my car (spun a rod bearing) and I've been surprised greatly by how close the bearing clearances seem. The service manual point to .0008-.0016 clearance for rods, and not much more for main bearings. These seem like press fits to me. (being sarcastic)
These tolerances sound crazy tight to me, especially coming from a hot-rod background where "looser is better until you can't get oil pressure" is taken seriously. It makes me wonder if the Evo oil pump is just small relative to old V8's
I plan on revving to 8K RPM, probably never more than that, making whatever I can push a stock turbo (VII for now, maybe a IX turbo later) to make on a 2.0 and E85, driving this car daily. I'm ok with running heavier oils and I plan on installing an oil pressure gauge and keeping an eagle eye on it.
Anyone have suggestions for clearances? Also, input on ring gap, side clearances, end-play ETC. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and yes, I'll keep searching.
