So from my understanding I cannot replace my ring and pinion.... I simply have to buy a WHOLE new transfer case?

1NastyMR and Evovin,
You both said you had your transfer cases built... do you mean you bought another transfer case and had it built? Or are you saying your "broken" transfer case was rebuilt? I guess that means that shep just reshimmed your t/c with the same ring/pinion?

How much did it end up costing both of you?

Thank you for the help guys.

Mine is the original Tcase that came w the car. I sent it to Shep when it was 34K miles.

I paid $995+ shipping for this:
LSD front differential
8mm to 10mm bolt upgrade
New seals and o-rings
Reshimming
Neodymium magnet

its an extra $1200 for New ring and pinion with bearings

Interesting... I already have the LSD front diff (2006MY)... It might be worth the 300 dollars on this transfer case to just rebuild it and GO DRAG RACING!!! lol

Evovin,
How loud was your transfer case when you removed it?

The 300 dollors does not cover a new ring and pinion if it needs it.

While your in there you could always remove the ACD stuff. I did when I had the man (shep) go thur my x-case.

Hrmm... I guess it's time to call Shep or TRE.

How does the x-fer case work if there is no ACD pressure to lock up the differential? How does that affect cornering?

I've had this question as well.... what causes the actual whining? is it the ring and pinion eating into each other from not meshing properly?

I've heard people on these boards claim redline heavy shockproof ate up their tcase.

I'd try a fluid change to amsoil severe gear 75-90 GL5 or OEM diaqueen. Do the rear end too and see what it sound like after that. It's worth a try before you rebuild.

my transfer case was causing a whine/howl that was at 40kph, 80kph and 120kph.
it sounded like the rear diff.

i swapped out the TC and the sound was gone. I pulled apart the old TC and the front contact patch looks ok, but the teeth look thinner with a burr on the top of the lip. the teeth have just worn down

Funny you say that...because I swore it was coming from the rear diff...

BAH! I guess it's time to buy a transfer case and a quarter master!

yeah i swapped my rear diff to no avail, waste of time!

when you pull out the TC, rotate it by hand in the normal direction, then in the reverse direction.
In the normal direction my sounded terrible, but in the reverse direction was smooth and quiet.

Cheers, Mike

Funny how upon reading this post, I just started to experience the exact variables on my car
I havent serviced any of my diffs in over 2years now which isnt best practice.
My mechanic told me that this Monday he will do a full oil change for both diffs and see if the sound will subdue.
Hoping for the best result guys, I will keep you all posted....

FWIW, my freshly rebuilt by shep transfer case (or shep rear diff) "whines" when the fluid is cold. It quiets right up once it's warm.

Have you noticed if it seems to be related to temperature at all?

I noticed it first during a 600 mile drive to my sister's for Thanksgiving. So I'm pretty sure the fluid was up to temp. I'll change the fluid and see what it does.

What are you running for fluid in your transfer case 03whitegsr?
