I used to own a evo 8 and honestly i didnt feel that the transmission was that strong. Given i did beat it pretty good and god knows how bad the guy before me. It was under warrenty and i believe i had almost every gear replaced at one time or another, not to mention throwout bearing. Never grinded any gears though. Never drove the IX 5spd. big difference between the transmissions or roughly the same?

 

I think the ratio's might be slightly different but as far as strength I think they'll fairly equal
