Siezed driveshaft in front hub assembly
Siezed driveshaft in front hub assembly
I am working on my front left corner of my car trying to replace the hub assemblies due to grindy wheel bearings. I managed to get the hub assembly to bust loose from the knuckle w/ a slide hammer, PB blaster and a torch. That was no easy task either. Now the problem is trying to get the drive shaft to break free from the hub assembly. I let the thing soak all night w/ some PB blasterr sprayed in to the thing. I still did not get the thing to move w/ the press tool used to press the drive shaft out. Anyone have any suggestions?
I really dont want to pull the front knuckle along w/ the whole drive shaft. It is looking like this will be the next step and bring the entire assembly to a press and press it out... If I read through the service manual correctly, the only thing holding the tripod joint together on our drive shafts is the rubber boot. I should be able to remove the rubber boot and take the section of the tripod joint housing out with the knuckle.
I will be getting some quotes on a new knuckle, mounting hardware, drive shaft end, and tie rods ends today for both sides.

This is a common problem for us as well. We have put 20 ton (metric) on some and only managed to mushroom the thread. If you do get it out make sure you apply some kind of anti-sieze compound to the splines before you put it back in.
Anti-sieze can absorb water.
I learned this from the old 2g DSM guys, their rear axles got stuck in the hubs all the time. Use regular automotive synthetic grease. Put it on the splines and put it between the abs ring and the hub.

Good luck I went through hell with the front one when I changed my clutch and the rear was a ***** as well tonight. After 2 hours I finally got my rear all just to change a damn lug stud. What can I say I couldnt bare to drive my evo with only 4/5 lugs holding new wheels on.
As far as advice/tips, I have none.

Welp, I had a shop press the shafts out of the hubs. They said one of them was a real pain in the butt. They are putting new boots on the lower joint and repacking with new greese. Looks like I get to put my car back together this weekend!
