Serious Backfiring

Two days ago while driving in the e-way my car (evo 8) suddenly began to backfiring & the check engine light came on. The guys from autozone ran the diagnostics and the code read cylinder 3 backfire & injector.

The guy said that most likely I need a new injector, I bought a injector cleaner but it did nothing.

What do you guys think, your input is appreciated.

Don't use injector cleaner.

Did you check the spark plugs? When was the last time those were replaced?

I doubt the oem injector just died, but if you need one let me know and I might have some for sale.

If you're not mechanically inclined, I'd get someone to replace your spark plugs. Since you drive an Evo VIII, you can use copper plugs which are about $2 each... If you go with these plugs, make sure you know the correct gapping, etc. Alternatively, you can put iridium plugs in, which are OEM equipment. These are much more expensive, but last much longer and you don't need to worry about gapping them.

Make sure the wires/coils are all plugged in and seated correctly... make sure the wires are plugged into the coils, and all the boots are snug on the spark plugs.

Also, check for water in the valve cover (where the spark plug boots seat)... I've seen some dudes get water in there after washing their cars, bad rain storms, etc. and it will make the engine break up very badly.

While you're in that area, make sure the injectors all look superficially ok - by that I mean, make sure they're still plugged in and seated. While unlikely, its possible that the little clip holding the injector's plug in place came loose or something, preventing the injector from getting any power... I've never seen that happen, but who knows.

If everything looks good, take it for an easy test drive. If you still have a problem, I'd replace your #3 injector. If that doesn't fix the problem, and you're out of ideas, take it to your tuner (or the dealership if your car is still stock) and do further diagnosis.

Good luck.

Falcon350z -I did all of the above but no luck. I replaced the spark plug (NGK) before the winter, 6 mths ago. I checked them & they look good, no water in vavle cover.

xmaciek82x - you say you have oem injectors for sale? Give me a price, I just need one (cyl 3-not sure if it matters).

Thanks for the pointers

No autozone..got it

Is it only doing if you get on it? or even if you are cruising?

My car is breaking up if I get on it. Changed my plugs and still doing it. I think I may have to change the coil packs. My coil packs do have 99k miles on them so I am sure they have done their time. lol

It backfires at all times, even at idle. It runs like Sh**, I defenitely need an injector. I just took it to a shop and thhe confirmed it.

I'm glad it wasnt anything serious.

Anyone have oem injectors they wana sell?

Have you installed any parts to the car performance wise? Meaning it was not backfiring, then once installing a certain part, it began to backfire? Reason I ask, is that it could be the cause. Just something for me to eliminate before I dig deeper. I put on an o2 dump and it had a hard backfire and jerk in the higher 5 and 6k rpm range in fourth gear. Once I got tuned it was fine.
