Breaking in Motor Question.

Ok heres the deal. I'm building my motor in about a month as soon as the car comes out of storage. My question is, i have the car tuned at the moment for the mods that are currently on the car... 268 cam, Buscher IC, Buscher Exhaust...some more stuff...etc.

I don't want to give out too much info on what’s going into the new motor (my buddy who i'm grudge racing this year watches this board like a hawk) but it's drastically different then the current set up, only thing i'm keeping is the compression ratio.

Can i break in my new motor on the same tune? Since i won't be going past 3,000rpm for the first while, i don't really see a problem with it....but maybe there would be..

The closest AWD Dyno is 8 hours from me, so it's not easy just to get a tune....

you *should* be fine running on your current tune for regular driving. This is assuming that you dont have any other crazy mods we dont know about

why don't you work with an email tuner. get a wideband and tactirx cable. Its not as crucial the tune be spot on because you won't be putting the motor under much stress during break in but it is important its at least close for the rings to break in properly

Well i realize i don't want to run rich and not seat the rings properly.....i think i might have to do an email tune. Just seems like a waste since i will be getting the car on the dyno AFTER it's been broken in....uugh

If your changing the injectors or way bigger turbo the car will need to have the tune modded at the least to be able to drive the car.

Break it in on your old I injectors. Other than that nothing else will affect it ao much that it won't run. It will run like crap but it'll do what you want. Personally I don't believe taking it easy on a break in. But we won't get into that lol. Good luck!

http://mellontuning.com great tuner, very knowledgeable and helpful. all the links to the software you will need (evoscan, ecuflash) as well as tactrix cable on the site. you can get a discount on the tactrix too..have used him for two years to tune for various changes in my set up.

Since we are talking about motor break-in periods, how long after having a built engine do you fellahs recommend a person waiting before getting a tune set on "kill mode"? Yes, I understand that a conservative tune will have to be done over the short-term. Thanks.

With new cars and engine building practices, there is no need for "break in" periods". I had an extensive process I went through for break in's, but after reading more and more I've realized there's no need. This is what I would suggest.

Start the car and let it get to full operating temp. Change oil and filter. Dial in some afr's and let the thing see some boost within the first 20 miles. Not FULL boost, but some. Take it and get it tuned. Done.

Great. This is good to know. Hopefully more will chime in with what they've discovered.

TOP SECRET Build? You should tell us all about it

GL with your motor build though. I hope you are happy. You will prob want to get a street tune on the new motor. just my suggestion.

Source of my information is from Mr. Buschur himself, and some other random motorcycle forums. Look into it more. Theres lots to be discovered outside of evom. Keep in mind the materials our motors are made from when doing research however. Hope this helped!

Here is what AMS recommends:

http://amsperformance.com/instructio...structions.pdf

AMS Engine Break-In Instructions

1. For the first 500 miles we suggest driving at varying engine speeds. Do not get on
the highway and set the cruise control for an hour straight. The key to seating the
rings is a variety of partial throttle and short bursts of acceleration. After
accelerating let off the throttle while still in gear, letting the engine slow the car
down. Don’t baby the car but don’t beat the hell out of the car either. A good
variety of driving conditions is the best for engine break-in.

*Make sure the car is tuned to a safe air/fuel ratio before any wide open throttle driving is done.
Running a car too rich during break-in can wash down cylinder walls not allowing the piston rings to
seat correctly.

2. Check your oil when you fill your gas tank, your new engine may consume some
oil during break-in. It is a good idea to continue to check the oil at fill ups even after
the break-in, turbo problems, heavy abuse & high boost levels will cause oil
consumption even on a healthy engine.

*Do note that engines with forged internals will consume more oil than a stock
engine so check your oil often! First Oil Change: 20 miles 10w40 regular oil

* If AMS has installed your engine the first oil change has already been done for you
Second Oil Change: 500 miles 10w40 regular oil
Third Oil Change: 1500 miles 10w40 regular oil

*You may notice a clamp on your oil filter. Make sure to re-use the clamp whenever you change the
filter! This clamp is necessary to prevent the filter from coming loose due to the added engine vibrations
when balance shafts have been removed.

From here on out you can change the oil at 3,000 mile intervals or sooner if your
engine sees a lot of abuse. You may also convert to synthetic if you choose.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask!
Special

I had my 2.3L motor built by MAP Performance... their break in instruction sheet was similar to the AMS recommendation; i.e., use 10W-40 conventional motor oil for break in.
