BF 272 Cams VS Kelford 272,280

Hey EVOM community. My stroker motor is about complete and i just finished order the SuperTech dual valve springs and retainer kit and the 1mm over intake/exhaust valves. Now i need to order some pretty aggressive cams that have badass results. I am stuck between the BF 272 cams and the Kelfords 272 or the Kelford 280s. Can anyone give some advice to help me lean in a certain direction. I am going with a 6262 turbo kit and i run e85 all day..

Thanks,
G

I was in that indecisive situation with my 4G64 build but it all depends on what you are using the car for. If you have it as a DD then the BF272s would not be the best choice from what Ive heard due to idle issues, stalling and a little lost in low end torque. Other than this, they will out perform from midrange and definitely topend the other 2 cams mentioned. I have decided to go with the M2s or S2s as mine will be a DD. Hope this helps

The BF 272 have ZERO idle issues. Please do not make assumptions off of what you have heard.

OP you really need a larger dur cam to help the 2.3L flow well above 7k. I figure you should be reving the 6262 out to 8-8.5k max. The kelford 280s will be your best choice. You may lose a bit more spool over the BF272 or Kelford 272s but the car will make an extra 30+hp above 7k with the 280s. I'm doing a LR2.4 and we are putting 288 cams in. I think the 280s are ideal for your setup and drivablity won't be that bad. Just raise your idle up 200rpms or so. Only do a build once!

bf272 are more comparable to kelford 280s anyway. i have never seen a graph from the kelfords. but i have from the bf's and you cant go wrong. i run the kelfords now but thats only because i couldnt run the bf's on my bottom end. good luck.

Im planning on going with the kelford 280s on my car in the next couple weeks just because I want something that makes good topend power. My LR 2.0 35r setup will be revving to about 9,000rpms and I feel from what ive read thus far on similar cams that in order to make good power beyond 7k rpms the kelford 280 will be my best bet especially with my higher compression pistons. I wanted the fp5r's but getting someone at FP to return a phone call or an email is impossible and ive heard valve clearance is an issue with anything above 9:1cr.

Wish someone would do more testing on the kelford 280s. Theres not much out there as far as where it competes with the Fp5r, bf272, kelford 272, and/or gains over factory cams. Just the raw specs that kelford gives you on their page is about all Ican find.

amazingly when i was down at jms they had a evo with bf272 and he planned on racing it he was on a jms 2.3 and br stage 3 head it idled fine sounded highly aggessive forsure but when he took me and my nephew for a ride it was smooth and not jumpy and vibration was at a min. so totally shot my impressions of how aggressive those cams really are.

if your having idle issues with the BF272 cams then its something else. these cams idle with no problems. i hold a 1100rpm at idle.

You should talk to Mikey above or John Bradley (Aaron From ER). They just finished up his Stroker motor and made some pretty amazing power.

I'm in a very similar position...except I have a built 2.0 and can not decide on a cam every shop I speak to says a different cam so I'm starting to think it is all based on preference ? Lol

Well from what I've heard the BF272s are really aggressive but work great on on stroker.

My car will be done in a few weeks so if you wanna see how the BF272s look on a 2.3 then just hold out a little.

Some is preference, some is going to be practical experience.

That being said for high horsepower with some manners, I have yet to see anything beat the S2. There are cams that will make more power possible but it seems that they sacrifice idle quality or a little spool time in order to do so.

We'll be testing a set of the JUNs and the GSC JUN style cams before too long in an Evo 8. The customs I have definitely picked up power over off the shelf S2s but will only be available for a IX and in limited quantities currently.
