My car is making a LOUD ticking noise in the head, after about 1 min its goes away. turn the car off for 5 mins its does it again.

Friends are telling me I need a Valve adjustment??

I replaced ALL belts, and bled the lifters. I am running cosworth 280/272.

Any help? Thanks guys

 

There is no adjustment the lifters are hydrolic..

 

It's not a Honda. Nothing to adjust. You could try replacing your lifters.

 

lifter tick, very common in the dsm world. I didnt know it happens to evo's too. Lucus oil additive works well when you change your oil to help with it. To get rid of it you need to pull all lifters and clean them.

 

I assume you're sure it's valve noise and not the normal injector ticking, correct?

Yes this is not injector tick.. lol I took all procedures on it Pull the lifters bleed them, cleaned them changed the oil..

I had a 03 gsr with the tick. bleed them and it was gone.

This is like bad valve slap. My buddy is telling me to test the oil pressure to the head and to check out the oil passage and see if its blocked by anything to the lifter by removing the 3 10 mil bolts.

What do you guys recommend to do?

 

I had the exact same problem about a month ago on my Evo 8. All my mechanic did was use some stuff called Sea Foam and that took care of the problem. If you already pulled your lifters and cleaned them up though it could be something else. I know this is real basic, but when was the last time you changed your oil and what weight are you using? That could also play a role.

i changed the oil 1k miles ago. same time i bleed the lifters. ill try seafoam see if it does the trick but ill wait a little longer since i have to change the oil

 

ok so i tried seafoam. didnt even smoke wtf haha.. half can in oil half in gas and nothing.

Chatter is still there i will get a video in the morning for a cold start to see if u guys can help.

 

Ill wait and see what you guys say about the video but i maybe looking at getting a set of the GSC Power-Division ZERO-TICK lifters ? :P

Honestly, sounds more like an exhaust leak from that Megan manifold of yours.

If it is, in fact your lifters, you can try and pull them and bleed them really good, then re-install them. But, after hearing this, it sounds like it could be a crack in your manifold or similar.

It's really hard to say without being there to personally inspect.

Just for ****s and giggles, try putting the stock manifold back on and see if the sound goes away. If it does, throw that Megan in the trash. The sound goes away once the engine warms up slightly, which would also point to a small exhaust leak of some sort. I'm not ruling out valvetrain issues, just saying the Megan's are known to crack and manifolds with cracks can make some weird noises when they are cold and otherwise.

 

I have bleed the lifters twice. If you listen towards the end it stops. around 55 seconds. it does go away. My oil pressure is around 40 at idle. and goes up to 100 and open throttle.

 

Have you tried a different oil and filter brand? What oil are you running?

If it was me, I'd replace all of the lifters. Otherwise you could replace a couple at a time to figure out which one is your culprit. It sounds like lifter noise, but it's louder than I'm used to hearing. Oil pressure seems reasonable?

 

That sounds similar to the problem I was having but it's a little different. The ticking I had would actually fade in and out for the first couple of minutes after a cold start before finally going away entirely. Coincidentally, I also had two leaks coming from my "Megan style" exhaust manifold because of two broken studs so I had that fixed when I took the car in to have the ticking noise looked at. However, I didn't really think the two problems were related and my mechanic never mentioned that he thought they were either. I ended up putting the stock manifold back on during that process because (as many others will tell you) the Megan style manifolds do tend to crack and develop leaks at a high rate because they're not as strong as the stock manifold.
