Question Question on boost control

Hello,

I just got a boost controller, its a HKS EVC V. Anyhow I called XS Engineering to ask them quote the price to install and tune the boost controller for me since I am new into turbo and rather choose to have a pro to install n tune it for me rather than do it myself

Anyhow the question is, they told me that I need an Air Fuel Controller to install the HKS EVC V. Is that true? I mean has anyone ever heard such a thing?

If not do I really need an air fuel controller?

what does the air fuel controller has to do with a boost controller? sorry my questions might be dumb but I really have no idea about all these

Thanks a lot guys in advance !

If you don't have any other mods and you don't plan going over 19 psi then no you don't need an A/F controller. In most cars you would but the EVO runs pretty rich from the factory. About 9.5 af at WOT. If you add any mods at all to up the hp other than a EBC than yes. You will need to then add fuel and then take fuel in certian areas.

While it's true that the EVOs run rich, and If you only hold 19 p.s.i. you might be OK, it's till wise to use some sort of AFC to make damned sure you are not running lean under boost & load. It's not a good idea to skimp on safety as blowing the engine is a real strong possibility (sad voice of experience talking here, plus lots of other's sad & expensive experiences )

I think that the tool of choice would be a dyno or data logger if you are worried about running lean, Usually an AFC won't tell you that unless it reads air fuel ratio. But yes it is always smart to have it on a dyno if you are going to do anything to it at all but several people are doing this with no issues. Just don't go over 19 psi, in other words don't be showing off and turn it up and you will be cool.
