Exclamation Exedy Twin Concerns, Help!

Hi all,

As of yesterday morning, my car appeared to be running well. I had some occasional groaning when engaging the Exedy Twin HD clutch but nothing to write home about and it came and went. From what I gather, this is normal.

However, after driving ~140 miles of easy cruising on the highway yesterday I got into town and noticed the clutch felt a little funny. The groaning has increased in volume, duration, and prevalence. In addition, the clutch appears to be very grabby, almost like a clutch dump even when I ease the clutch out. The only way I can get normal starts is with about 3k RPM and a slow engagement. The clutch actually feels a lot like when I first had it installed and it was super grabby. I now have about 1900 miles on it and this is deeply concerning me. From what I can tell, the friction point may be a touch late, but not much different than before I had any issue. Not sure if this is an issue with the clutch or simply some adjustment issue.

Please let me know your thoughts! I will contact Strictly Modified who did the work for me tomorrow.

My friend with a WRX had issues like this. She took it to a shop and according to them the clutch "mated" to the flywheel. Meaning the plate got stuck to the flywheel but idk how reliable that information is.

That would blow a ton... I think the pedal is out of adjustment, really hoping...

After talking to SM (I always appreciate the immediate responses and willingness to help Cisco!), I am going to beat on the clutch a bit to heat and hopefully clean the mating surface. I should have mentioned the car had been sitting for 7 days before my 140 miles trip the other day which may have allowed moisture or something to build up in the clutch plate area causing some rust or material buildup. If anyone else has experienced this or has an idea what might be the issue, please do not hesitate to post!

Beat on it a bit like he says. I think some hard shifting and some launches are in order haha. Imho though make sure the car is completely warm before doing any of that.

When he said Nate I was rather confused why he was addressing me lol.

I slipped it a good deal and heated it up on a ~45 min cruise (most of it wasn't harsh so I kept driving around for a while) and did a couple 5.7k launches and I do believe things are better! It actually wasn't until I did the full on, 2 step limited launches that things improved. I did about three and the groaning is back to what it used to be and I think it is less grabby. I will confirm when I get back in the car later.

BTW, first launches with the new clutch and woohoo that thing gets going in a hurry! It was pretty damp when I was out so I was getting wheel hop when getting a good slip from mid range RPM (~4k) and some unpleasantness but for the actual launches it was dry and the launches were smooth. Even got the wheels to squeal! Good stuff that Exedy

Im glad its worked out for you boss! Get some trailing arm bushings to eliminate that wheel hop and you should be golden!

NO noise this afternoon after beating on it a bit this morning, clutch is again engaging properly. Who knew that going at it with a hammer would get the job done?
