Dropped a keeper

OK so I think I MIGHT have dropped a keeper down one of the oil galleys or whatever they're called while installing cams/springs but I'm not sure if it went down there. Where does that lead to, straight to the oil pan? If that's the case, I'll gladly take the pan off to fish it out but if it doesn't lead to the oil pan, where does it go to?

And if it does go to the oil pan, won't it just sit at the bottom or could it get sucked back up?

I bought extra keepers so the rest of the install is not a problem.

Thanks guys.

I wouldn't chance leaving it in the block, it is light enough to get picked up by cold (thick) oil and splashed around in the rotating assembly.

The pan and splash gaurd is easy enough to drop, only a little over an hour. The hardest part of the task is cleaning up the old silicon off of the block and pan.

So it is in the pan then if anything? Or would it get stuck somewhere?

Thanks

I've been lucky and that was the case. Either way now you only have the option to try cause it's not that big of deal. Drain the oil, take all the bolts out and lightly tap the side if she won't budge. Just don't warp a flange by prying too hard.

Rag and brake clean to dry all the surfaces on the block where the pan attaches, and a gasket scraper or some sort of blade to get the sealer off. Try not to scratch the surface too much. Get yourself a tube of ULTRA GRAY from the store, it's the only stuff to use on pans..

Take the opportunity to clean out the pan good with some cleaner like simple green or something, wash and dry it good.

Once the pan is off you'll probably find the keeper.

Oh yes, and you'll see the oil pickup tube.. fyi if you decide to take that and the tray off, I believe there is a gasket that goes to with it, just fyi

OK I probably am going to take the pan off tonight but what is the point of taking the oil pickup tube? Could the keeper get stuck in there or something?

Thanks man

chances are it will NOT be sitting on top of that tray... but as you can see, you would have to remove the pickup tube to take the tray off.

So you think it's in the pan then? Hopefully I won't need to take that tray off.

It's probably in the pan, especially if it was dropped on the driver's side. I had the damn straw shoot out of a cleaner can and went right down an oil galley once.. it ended up in one of the traps inside the pan (you'll see what I mean when you take it off)

Wait so if I'm looking at that correctly, that mesh will prevent the keeper from being sucked up, correct? So would I really need to bother going in an getting it?

Thanks for staying with me here on this one

I would get it regardless. Best case it is in the pan, also, I would still want to remove it and get it away from the oil pickup tube. All you are doing by leaving it there is risking slowing the flow of oil through the motor (if it is up blocking the mesh) and also if it is on top of the tray throwing it up into the rotating assembly.

What's the worst case? Can it get stuck in the oil galleys?
